Do I need to split chains when replacing chain and sprocket or can I simply move the wheel forward and slip the chain off, then remove wheel to get chain off swing arm?

Any advice on how to do this, best place to buy chain & sprocket set much appreciated

You can -

Move the wheel forward and slip che chain off the back sprocket-but that ain't gunna help get the chain off the bike.Removing the swingarm is a really bad way of removing an old chain.
The most affective & quick method is to spent ?20 on a cheap angle grinder and just cut that baby right off-30 seconds should do it.
Remember-common sence prevails - wear safety glasses if ya ain't done this sort of thing before & try not to cut the bike in half & the same time :}
Don't let the sparks go near the battery or battery breather or it'll be:B before bedtime.

An angle grinder is a falubale piece of kit - shout last a lifetime if ya jut using it for this kind of job. & make sure ya know the difference between a cutting disk & a grinding disk.U'll need a cutting one (natch).

Chains

So if I slide the wheel forward, slip to off the back sprocket and remove the rear wheel will I then be able to remove chain fully.

Can I fit a new chain without that funny riviting thingie?

No-

Have a look @ ya machine and you'll see that where the swing arm connects to the frame-there is no way to get the chain away without A)removing the swing arm(very bad idea) or B) splitting the chain (the easiest way).

Wonce U've taken the chain off DO NOT FIT A SPLIT LINK CHAIN. Ya may think it'll be quicker to put on and off when ya need to but on a machine tis quick the splitlink will fly off and you could end up in a lot of trouble.
Fit a rivet link type. There is a knack to doing these if ya never done one before ,so take ya time and..........
Oh sod it!!! Give me a call on 01753 576989 if ya want to go through it.

It's my work No so just ask for me-Ben.
Cheers.

You need a new chain with a soft link. When u fit it, you peen over the ends with a hammer or parallel punch (some skill involved) Best play safe and get a dealer to do it if ur at all unsure of doing it yerself.

You can also get an old chain off by using a black and decker and a grinding wheel, simply grind down the rivets on a side plate until its smooth, then the side plate will just lever off. I ALWAYS fit new sprockets with a new chain. They are fairly cheap and wear as well as the chain as it stretches.:rolleyes:
