Replacement bike ... and dealers

Well, just drove up to Oxford yesterday and saw a nice blue blackbird (W reg) to replace my nice blue blackbird (S reg) that I managed to write off a few weeks ago. Test ride went well and the bike is in very good condition. Price was about right and the dealer will put two new tyres on (Avon ST B-rated) and do a subsidised 16000 service as well as give it a new MOT.

So I bought it :)

Ok so far, but the TAX has run out, and they wont pay for that; I tried, but fair enough I suppose!
I am supposed to pick it up next Saturday, but dont want to ride it without TAX, and they are saying they generally don't tax bikes as "they dont have the manpower"! What utter bollox!

I mean, its not a big deal, I can go to the nearest post office up there (thank you postoffice.com branch finder) and tax it myself when I get the MOT, but why should I have to. It's not enough to make me tell them to stuff it, but it makes me annoyed when your average car dealer will make sure everything is sorted when you come to pick it up.

Has anyone else had this dealer problem?
Also, dont dealers have the ability to tax vehicles for part-month periods as when I tax it on saturday (30th), I'll have to tax it for the whole of April to make sure its covered... D'oh!

I know I could just ride around without it for a day or two, but being a law abiding citizen (unlike most it seems) I dont like jeopordising my insurance etc...

You could.....

just pick it up a bit later than you originally intended! I had a similar problem (and many others) with a certain Honda dealer in s.wales, who was just the same. Once they have the sale, they just don't care!
By the way, you could always cancel and come and buy my mint 5k miler on an 02 plate (Candy Glory Red) instead! man8um

Pp don't post offices close on Saturday afternoons?
Pick it up just after they close, take your Insurance with you so if you do get stopped show the Bill of sale and explain you are unable to tax due to just picking it up. They should issue you with a ticket to produce your documents and a valid Tax disc for when you were stopped.
If you don't get stopped, well, fine tax it from May.

the offence is "failure to display" a current tax disc,!! no excuses Ive heard of gets you out of that one, it's even supposed to be taxed if your on your way to "mot" the bike!! :dunno:
it "may" have been nicked though!!

i believe you are allowed a few days to get tax so long as you have proof of purchase.the police dont prosicute for not paying tax that is done by dvla

i've had a couple of tax discs nicked from previous bikes when i've had them parked in central london :bang: . i've resorted to carrying my tax disc in my wallet - i understand that it is an offence , but am i likely to get charged for it?

like owt else if its an "osifer" chances are NOT, cos you can "produce", if its a camera linked to the DVLA and no record of tax paid shows YEP!! every time,!! they tend to wait a couple of days "just in case" you have taxed the vehicle that day!! and it hadnt "updated" on the DVLA computer,!!
there's a lot of the tax disc camera vans about nowdays, some mistake them for "Dick Turpins van's"

Thanks guys.

I'll take my insurance and stuff with me and try and tax it. If not open I'll do the "I've just collected it" thing and hope for a producer. I'd rather get it taxed as the insurance says it will invalidate the cover if not taxed and all up to date. a few quid extra to do it on Sat morn is worth it just to get some wheels back! I'm missing it so much. I've been without for a month now... must .... get .... speed.... fix......

sorry BigJon, I specfically wanted a blue one (as my last one was blue and the g/f really liked it - and as shes paying for it up front and I'm paying her back slowly ;) ... )

Cheers
Al

A dealer CAN tax your bike providing he has your insurance docs, otherwise he would have to register the bike to the himself, tax it and then when he gets the log book back send it off again and register it in YOUR name..

Dealers no longer have any special powers at all when it comes to taxing a vehicle..

Robbo.. I think you are one of lifes Mr Nice guys,, a proper gent.. So it pains to say sorry, but your wrong

Providing the vehicle in question is booked in to the nearest MOT station the owner or his agent is entitled to drive /ride the vehicle to and from the testing station ( providing the vehicle does not collect a red notice of course, and that the person is entitled by reason of licence and insurance )

In fact if you have newly built bike with no registration plate at all, you are still allowed to take it to the nearest testing station :p

Yes Johns right.

It is the only time you are allowed to take a S,O,R,N vehicle on the road, providing you have a prebooked appointment at the test station, and you are only on the way too or from the test station.

You do have to have relevant insurance though.

Thanks again guys for your thoughts/knowledge.

I talked to my insurance and they are sending a cover note to the garage this week, and I just talked to the garage (different, Snr. salesman) and he said it would be no problem for them to tax it if they get the insurance doc.

So I'm happy now... just cant wait 'till Saturday... except I'm riding up there as pillion on a mates TL1000 with no grab rail (eek!)

Then its off to 1200Pete's place when I get back, to fit the SW-Motech rack and box I bought the weekend before I binned the last one. Thanks Pete for keeping hold of it for me... You did keep hold of it didn't you ?
