“Start ‘em young."
”What was once a philosophy (in terms of sports development, based upon the “Nurture Principle”) has evolved to become a “force-feed”, business-based approach to increasing participation. That mind-set is focused, now, upon 6-12 year-olds in contact and non-contact sports of all types, regardless of aptitude, recognisable expertise or validated experience.
Increased participation, in conjunction with evermore competition under evermore constrictive rules for participation and ever-greater demands for perfection leads, ultimately, to higher profits for the ruling bodies. More money. That’s the driver for all sports, now. No such thing as “amateurs” anymore. It’s a money machine, and kids are now a commodity, just like the rest of humanity.
With the exception of specialist or specific, sports-dedicated media, not many take notice of the “force-feed” approach until somebody dies as a result of their participation in their chosen sporting activity: that is, provided sufficient numbers of the aforementioned media take the time and trouble to mention the passing of someone whose main motivation was to realise their dream of glory: but they must first strive to be “sponsored by…” or they can never realise their dream.
In the eyes of the financiers, no loss of life is sufficient to deflect them from their goal: as long as that life is not theirs or that of heirs. As they say: “Life goes on. And as long as it’s my life that goes on, I don’t give a fuck about anyone, or anything else.”
