Project oops....

A couple of reasons for the name;
  1. I bought a CAT N - I knew that, but I guess it would put some off
  2. I spent money that I didn't have - but then it's my fault for trawling the insurance auctions
  3. I'm a glutton for punishment
  4. This is my 3rd 'bird
  5. The previous owner clearly had an oops moment...
But anyway - finally having a partner who is a confident rider means we are planning some touring holidays. I've sorted their Bandit and my Buell is hardly suitable for touring on.

The bike was delivered today. I wonder if it belonged to anyone on here previously??

Oddly registered (but all fine - nothing dodgy) it was first registered April 2001 but is an XXW model ('98) so still a carbie. 45k odd miles and seems to have been well looked after.

Anyway, pulled the panels off it - cosmetic damage only, already have a new side panel, mirror mount and screen for it, just need to sort a nose.

Appears to have a relatively new alloy rad, newish front discs, magnum scottoiler thingy.

Will be fixing it up, giving it a service and putting a few miles on it.

Must be difficult to fill the rad.
Very chunky looking

Dark Angel

Still kickin' it!
The previous owner mustn't have been too confident as a repair/spanner-man.

I sure most members on here would have whipped that back into shape in no time.

Bah... on my chores list for today. Belt on the mower broke and that also arrived today :(
You bought a mower from an insurance auction, too..? Was that the result of a high speed off as well..? ;)

Not a bad looking bird that, looks usable pretty much as is & shouldn't take much to clean it up then repair the few bits it needs (y)

Well, turned out the reason it wouldn't crank was cylinder 3 was literally full of fuel... odd. Pulled the float bowl off the carb and all appears well, float valve seals fine, float is all good. Fuel tap appears to function fine. Will keep an eye on that one...

Back together and running like a champ... now to the bodywork!

Nice bit of welding on that rad! Looks like a race radiator! i.e. extra capacity!:motorino:

The rad looks the same as on my 96 bird.
30% more coolant...not that it ever ran hot. If you find the side fairings a little tight it will be the rad as its a thicker core.
Letting out the v panel a small amount will ensure all the panels fit as they should.
It may have already been done if so no probs.

The rad looks like your typical chinky one to me, nothing wrong with that but I suggest whipping it off & giving it a good coat of heat resistant paint or lacquer, if you don't there is a good chance it will be beginning to rot after being caught out in the rain ;)

Yes, the V panel has been notched to clear the thicker rad already. :) All the panels fit fine

Sorted the cans out - my excuse being that the RH one was damaged and actually cracked the mounting tab off it. So some Two Brothers Racing carbon Black Series seemed to fit the bill...

Just waiting to try and sort a replacement nose. In the mean time I'll prep the other panels for paint and get them sorted.

Ahem.....the grass....??

Ahem.....the grass....??

The grass has been massacred

It's in bits as cylinder 3 filled with fuel...

Petcock and carb service time... while I'm there I'll put some new fuel and vac hoses on as the old ones arent very healthy.

Waiting for parts now :juggle:

Tested fuel tap, turns on fine with vacuum applied, then doesn't shut off until manually turned off...

Shouldn't be an issue if the float valves were sealing properly, #3 is the only carb thats an issue and does actually appear to seal when tested on the bench. Hey ho.... new bits on the way....
