Possible Exhaust Leak

Hi All, purchased by first bird on the weekend (97 carby model) - and it is without doubt the best bike I have every owned @tu*. It needs a little work and first on the list is a possible exhaust leak, and although I need to get the fairings off to confirm, sounds like its coming from the right hand can rather than the downpipes/collector.

The insides of the can do look rather rusty - have any of you guys had problems with corrosion in the silencer?

Not had a problem with the cans on my carbie & not heard of any issues with them, but the collector box fell apart at around 48,000 miles. It sounded like it was blowing from where the downpipe attaches to the can.

The original downpipes are made of mild steel & can rust quite badly, so that's where I'd look first.

Oh, & welcome to the forum (you might want to post a 'Hi' in the coffee shop as some people might not appreciate posting in the Help section first :-0) We don't bite)

Rattling from the right hand side may be cam chain tensioner (cct), have a search on here plenty of threads.

Problem Fixed

I thought I would post an update - in case this is some help to someone else in the future.

I took of the fairing and checked out the down pipes, these had no rust on them at all and no leaks (bearing in mind this is a 19 year old bike with 40K miles) - so I have to assume that these have been replaced with later stainless steel versions.

I did consider the CCT, but the noise was definitely originating from the rear rather than engine - I have read that a CCT failure sounds like a bag of rattling marbles, and this just sounded like a blowing exhaust.

So I ordered a replacement Honda silencer off of a well known auction site (which arrived yesterday).

I took off the old silencer, and noticed there was definitely some bits rattling round in there (but wouldn't come out know matter how much I shook it).

New silencer on, and the bird is now purring.

Job done - and thanks for all your help @tu*
