Police Charge For Recovery Of Stolen Bikes?

Just been reading on annother forum of someone who recently had his bike stolen but has been lucky enough for it to have been found.

Apparently when he reported it stolen police gave him the option of "choosing" for them to recover it if found at a charge of ?150.
Alternative was that if found they would tell him but leave it where it was for him to recover. As it wasn't worth a great deal and he didn't think it would be found he declined their offer and said he'd recover it himself if found.

In the event they found it in a lock up in Sth London (with other bikes) when they caught a gang nicking bikes. Police recovered it anyway as they wanted to fingerprint it for evidence.

Having told him the good news they've now told him he can't have it for a few more days while they get forensic evidence and then he must pay 'em ?150 to get it back.

If ever there was good news/bad news story eh!

Just seems a tad rough to me, it's not as if you could claim ?150 off insurance either....
Apparently he's thinking of leaving it with 'em but they've said something about additional storage charges if he does that. If he "abandons" it with 'em, they sell it and still bill him for the additioanl charges not covered by the sale.

UH?

This is manic .....

So what does matey do then ?

I think I would be inclined to knock ?150 of the fookin poll tax ( or the part set aside for policing ) and when the shit hit the fan get all the newspapers involved !

I mean, exactly how many times have we got to pay the c^nts for the same shit poor service ?

The final part of the tale is that he has just got the bike back today witout having to pay charges. His bike was also totally undamaged, he had no alarm fitted.

He did say that one of the other bikes recovered from the lockup was being collected by it's owner at the same time. Apparently the back light and seat had been ripped out to get at the alarm wiring.

He's concluded that it's better off not to have alarm 'cause if stolen it's less likely to be damaged.

Funnily enough about7 or 8 years ago I had a car badly damaged during a failed attempt to steal it (in Sunderland!!). The police who attended said it's better not to lock the car and tell the insurance company fibs as that way if it is recovered it's less likely to be damaged beyond repair!!

I used to work with a bloke that NEVER locked his car, he had an immobiliser fitted in an "out of the way" place so he could disable it, and had a very old cheap radio fitted, it was opened and had attempts to steal it no less than 8 times "he lives in Leeds" and never once suffered any damage!! his neighbours have all had their cars broken into as well, every one suffering damage to doors, windows, and had other parts nicked, yes his car IS a heap of shit but at least his insurance is low!! :dunno:
