I thought the Bird had iridium coated plugs fitted as standard anyway.:dunno: Does that mean there is a lesser type that can be fitted, if so why would you want to??

There are 2 diffrent types of standard plug

For Blackbirds up to 2002 Iridium tipped

For Blackbirds 2002> to date Platinum tipped

They are all expensive, the Iridiums are about ?10 each and the Platinum ones anything upto ?20 each

Jaws does good deals on them.

Wrong way round dude, up to and including 2000 (carbed and FI) they were platinum OE, though you can get an Iridium equivalent. 01 onwards Iridium, and Iridium are the most expensive ones.

To be honest I got the info of Jaws web page !!!!!!!

But a quick look on the NGK site says there are 3 diffrent plugs for the Bird

all models up to the XXY CR9EH1X-9 Iridium

XX01 IMR9A-9H Iridium (expensive)

XX02 on IMR9C-9H Iridium (again expensive)

They are all Iridium, but the last 2 are over twice the price of the plugs for the early bird, so what's the diffrence???????

There are now FOUR basic types. but the question is relevent only to pre efi bikes ( 99 onwards you need the iridium for sure cos of the way it uses the fuel and cos of the way it is injected...)

the early carb birds were fitted with the old CR9EHVX-9.. They were subsequently superceded at the recomendation of both Honda and NGK with the CR9EHIX-9 iridium type.. after that they changed twice again on later models

Now me being me I am a great believer in admiting a lack of knowledge as quick as gobbing off when I do know something..

I have NO idea why suddenly both the plug manufacturer and the bike manufacturer should recomend the change, but I do know those folks must have done it for a reason ( Honda does not make plugs so it was certainly not a fiscal question ) and they have more know how in that area than almost everyone who is likely to visit us poor low lifes on this ere forum.. so I am happy to go with their recomendation and so far, in the past 5 years, it seems to have worked out well for folk :p
