Hi Clive,

I used a soldering iron and a length of ABS and melted the plastic on the back. It worked on my seat cowling when some twat kicked it.

The problem with cracks is they have a tendency to propogate and continue getting longer until you get complete failure.

In other applications, the best way to prevent this crack propogation is to drill a hole through the plastic at either end of the crack, its very important to be either the exact end or beyond it.

You can then fill the crack and the drilled holes through other means (ABS filler and solder iron has been suggested)

Best way to get hold of some abs is to raid a source of scrap plastic, you may even find some red, ABS is one of the most common plastics in use today.

Advice

Hi Clive, I'm a part owner of Evolution Composites, we make carbon and glass products for sports bikes and some of the BSB and World Endurance teams. I don't get my hands dirty personally so not much help, but if you give a guy called Graham a call on 01590 622355 tomorrow morning and tell him Andy sent you he might be able to give you some good advice as he makes repairs on race fairings etc every day.

By the way, I'm a newbie on the Bird (Ducati convert) and l love it. It's great 'cos I can go out for a ride and make it home without the aid of a recovery truck with all my fillings in place. I also don't fear the rain any more!

Hope it helps.
