Apple design their products so that no-one but they can repair them. They also design so they cannot be upgraded. I will never give them a penny of my hard-earned cash. Having said that they are well designed and built. If you are happy to be ripped off then go for it. I have an excellent Huawei P20.

Unfortunately what is true of many electronic gadgets phones included is that they are designed to reach a point where they can no longer be upgraded so that you end up buying a newer model (end of usable life being inbuilt if you like)

Apple were known for this inbuilt redundancy and have been in us court for it, I don't suppose that much has changed in recent years

Apple products can and are repaired by independents (even I have changed a battery in an iPhone and a screen in an ipad),independents can and do install memory upgrades, IOS is updated on a more or less weekly basis.

That is what I was challenging, don’t think there is any difference there to other brands?

Probably Money, several years back a Scottish company with a Japanese sounding name head hunted the top guys from several other major companies, they are no longer in business

I took my old iPad Air2 in for repair as it wouldn’t charge properly or retain what it received, 2 things wrong a broken input port and a failed battery.

Cost? £399 Then I saw it was a new one in exchange which made me feel better.

Load of bollocks. Ma P's iPhone 8 was repaired by an indie shop in Pontypridd back in November and new iPhones are good for the next four upgrades of iOS. They're now rolling out kits so that some minor repair can be carried out by owners themselves.
