Other bike rear shock replacement

Hello peeps.
I've searched the forums but failed to find any query like this one. I have seen and read about fork replacement and front end rebuilds from fireblades and Hyabusas, but I haven't seen anywhere if a different rear shock would fit. Does anyone know is something like an R1 or a Fireblade or ZX10R rear shock would fit? I ask because mine is the original 1997 shock, I am a great big fat lardy git and the thing is no longer adjustable and let's face it, it's getting knackered. I will most likely get a shock of Jaws ahom I have purchased from before, but the bike has been off the road for a couple of years whilst I built a house and didn't have time to ride (plus I couldn't get bags of cement and plasterboard on the 'Bird, the wind sheer was terrible!).

I have sod all money what with building the house and garden and a stupidly expensive dog that decided to have a heart murmur that now needs surgery but the fun and relief I crave from riding my bike was so badly missed! Problem is, the old girl is tired, having been dropped a couple of times and having had a fence panel fall on it. I need a complete respray and just want to ride it before winter makes it completely un-fun. My mate just brought a brand new Triumph Tiger Sport and that thing is awesome! I still prefer my bird, but I can definitely feel that rear shock letting it down a bit now.

LOOOOONG winded question, sorry. But, in short, are there other shocks going cheap on ebay that would fit the bike and be suitable for a fat arse like me, and make the bike handle properly again?

Thanks for any help, it's much needed.

Clueless in most things
I personally haven't heard of other bike rear shock swaps onto a bird but then I don't know great deal.

The ones I see often mentioned and as you mention money is tight is as follows

Best value for money is direct from John (Jaws) who will tailor it more too you, weight, type of riding etc and will then rebuild it to your needs

Then for quite a bit more, maxton and then for silly money, Ohlins.

The cheapest of the cheapest way if money is super super tight, would be to buy an oem second hand one from a low mileage late registered bird, I believe they are all the same? But to be honest some of them are so close to Jaws prices, I'd rather get one made for me and ready to go for not much more knowing it would last for quite some time.

good looking AND modest
I would also advise getting a refurbished one from Jaws, over a second hand unit that may be as bad as the one you have, that's the option I would plumb for if I were in your position. :dunno:

Thanks guys. As said, I'm pretty much sold on the Jaws replacement, but looking at the fleabay, I see a gazzilion shocks and just wondered. As said, front replacements seem done, but never read anything about rear shocks.

You know, before I got married and had pets, I did once have disposable cash for things whereas now, my disposable cash is, apparently, not mine. :violin: Still, the bike is my favorite thing (apart from my guitars) and I want to get it back to its once beautiful glory.
