Mixed feelings on his skills v tactics which got me thinking about Footballers who never fulfilled their potential, one such player for me was Peter Marinello who played a couple of times for Arsenal, I saw him come on as a sub & he absolutely blew me away with his skill, I was very surprised when he was sold to a Scottish club & never achieved his potential

At Reading there was a player called Robin Friday., when they palyed in the old 3rd and 4th divisions.

He was a genius (and I do not make that statement lightly) he could have been a world class player. On matchdays he would in the Spread Eagle Pub opposite the old Elm Park grlound until about 30 minutes beforte kickoff and he would amble into the ground with his boot laces tied around his neck. He did bugger all training, but every Saturday or matchday you would be guaranteed a minimum 9/10 performanceand he would work his socks off

This tells his story better than I ever could

There is also a really good book about him (which I must get out and read again)

He scored a goal (against Tranmere IIRC) and even the Ref the famous Clive Thomas applauded. I was at the game and still remember it as if it was yesterday, absolutely world class.

He eventually went to Cardiff and drugs got the better of him and he was dead within a couple of years, but he is still fondly remembered at Reading as a genius who really never did fullfill his potential
