New rack and soft pannier rails.

I decided to do away with the rentec rack that has served me well over the last 12 months as a topbox mount, and resolve the potential problem of soft panniers scratching the tail piece. I prefer soft panniers as I like the flexibility of them.

Firstly I got a friend to put a bend down each side of piece of 3mm CS4 steel (cold rolled mild steel). Next was to hacksaw to the required shape and I have to blow my own trumpet here as it was all done with one hacksaw blade (ok, I cheated it was an unbreakable starrett 24tpi jobbie) Anyway the plate was cut to fit a givi top box mounting plate and to include the slots on the givi plate. The idea for this was to reduce weight and stop water laying on the plate. The next job involved angle grinding the edges and finally filing using tang/2nd cut and smooth files finishing with emery cloth to final shape and finish.

I have loaded the original rentec rack/top box to 20kg with no damage. And would expect this to handle the same weight... The final weight of the rack plate and the tubular rentec rack is about the same.

Next job involved an simple job of manupulating some hot rolled steel of 20mm x 3mm flat... These can be fitted to the bike in under 5 minutes and removed easily when not reqired, they also help support the rack plate for loading up the top box. SWMBO said that the panniers are held back away from her legs and if the rails are left on the bike it gives her some hand hold options.

The panniers are supported by the top rail and the clearance between the panniers and bike tail piece is around 25mm. Also the standard rear indicators do not touch the panniers, when fitted. Total cost ?10.

Nice work...

Hi, Mr. Silverfox.xx. w;;v

Just seen that jolly nice rack and pannier stays you've made for your bike.

Do you fancy making another set, and if so, how much would they be (obviously taking materials and your time into account).

If you dont want to do it, I will understand, but they DO look very nice...

The rack plate is a right git to make, but I will make enquiries to my material supplier, I would prefer to make the rack from duralloy (strong alloy), as its easier to work with (and would have prefered mine made from duralloy). I'll be back to you on that one but give me a bit of time.

My email addy is cwroper@hotmail.co.uk.

As for the pannier rails/support, these are easy to replicate and if you email me I'll get back to you.

Very nice Job Clive..

Do the straps of the soft luggage still go over the seat mate or have you designed a fitting to wrap them over your side rails, if you get my drift?

I usually fit the straps under the seat (helps stop anyone pilfering them). But the straps lay across the top pannier rails so reducing any chance of them rubbing on the paintwork.... I'll sort some close up piccys with panniers fitted. It would be possible to have the pannier straps on top of the seat also.

I have tried them loaded up with folding camp type chair and a full size brolly... all seems fine.

Just bought a 8kg tent, and I had about 5 to 6 kg in the top box so to get it home I strapped it (nervously) on the top box top rack I made, the pull down straps were wrapped around the front and rear (brazed on) rails... tested to 120 thingys and over a bumpy road on the 10 mile journey home, with no problems. However I would'nt feel 100% confident with more than 4kg on the top box top rack...

It should be noted that the pannier side rails were not fitted so all the weight about 15kg was on the home made top box support plate.

Mtk asked me on a ride out if it was stable... I did'nt know it was there.

Top Box 'Tent' Rack

Hi silverfox,

Just seen your rack whilst hunting around for the very same thing.

Are you in the business of making them for others? If so, I'm interested.

My top box is a Givi Maxia and I'd really like the option of carrying bulky but light items that won't go in the box.

If you don't want to make one for me, that's ok.

good looking AND modest
I've used Clive's side pieces to keep my soft luggage away from the paint, worked luverly!! @tu* easy to fit and remove, gives "her" a little something extra to hang on to when the panniers are not fitted!!

That's an old thread, 2007, I used that system for several years with no problem. I just upped to hard panniers a couple of years ago.... but the rack I still use.

Neat idea & nicely made Clive. It certainly saves the tail fairing which can take abit of stick inspite of paint protection with soft luggage.

I'd recommend something like this for anyone@tu*
