Shinya Nakano was lucky to avoid serious injury when he was sent cart-wheeling from his Kawasaki after suffering a rear tyre failure at over 200mph on the thirteenth lap of the Gran Premio Cinzano d?Italia on Sunday.

The Japanese rider spiralled into a trackside barrier after his Bridgestone tyre exploded but, after treatment at the medical centre, it was confirmed that he was only suffering from contusions, a bruised left shoulder, a bruised wrist and an injured finger on his right hand. c7u8

The former 250cc star, who had qualified over a second quicker on the Ninja ZX-RR than he had on the Yamaha M1 one year previously, admitted it was a fortuitous escape but added that he plans to ride at Catalunya this coming weekend.

?It was a very hard crash but I feel fine,? commented Nakano, whose parents had flown in specially from Japan to watch the race. ?I don?t know if I was really unlucky or really lucky! My whole body is hurting right now but there are no major injuries.

?I didn?t really know what happened ? I felt the rear end vibrate and something break. R#?

I remember the crash clearly ? I hit the ground hard and as I slid along the straight I knew it was a bad fall and got a bit worried the closer I got to the wall.

?When the stewards put me on the stretcher I tried to show everybody that I was fine because I knew people would be worried about me. Luckily I didn?t hurt myself too badly and I?m looking forward to putting it behind me at the next race.?

Meanwhile, Team Manager Harald Eckl explained that the team were still unsure of the exact reason for the tyre explosion. ?I saw the crash from pit wall and, after watching the bike cartwheel down the track, I'm amazed that Shinya came through it without serious injury,? commented the German.

?We don't know what caused the failure at this time, but the tyre will be sent back to Bridgestone in Japan tomorrow for analysis and I'm confident that we'll have an explanation before the next race at Catalunya.?
