TEAM SUZUKI ECSTAR BACK TO RACE IN AUSTRIA

The summer break is over for the MotoGP? riders and Team SUZUKI ECSTAR?s Aleix Espargar? and Maverick Vi?ales are heading to Spielberg, Austria for the 10th GP of the season this weekend.

The Red Bull Ring is a newcomer in the MotoGP? calendar, but the riders have already had the chance to test there some weeks ago in a two-day session that allowed them to appreciate its characteristics but ? most importantly ?to also gather information and prepare for the race.

The riders arrive in Austria after hard races in Assen and Germany, where rain made the set-up difficult for the GSX-RR, although they were very useful to Suzuki?s engineers to learn the machine?s reactions in wet conditions and work through them during the summer break. This will give a further boost to Vi?ales and Espargar? for a positive race, as the test in July proved the GSX-RR to be a competitive machine thanks to its chassis characteristics.

The Red Bull Ring in Spielberg is located in the scenic Murtal-region of Styria. The circuit was originally built in 1969, then known as the ?sterreichring. In 1996 it was rebuilt with the track-layout it still has today; and in 2011 it was reopened as the Red Bull Ring and again became the centre of Austrian motorsports. The sloping terrain and the natural arena are trademark features of the Red Bull Ring with the 18-metre-high landmark ?Bull of Spielberg? in the centre and the voestalpine wing offering a spectacular architectural highlight. With a length of 4.318 km it features 10 turns and an altitude difference of 65 metres. The 2016 season will see the Red Bull Ring host its first MotoGP? race as the World Championship returns to Austria for the first time since 1997.

Maverick Vi?ales:

?This summer break has been very useful for me to recover some energy and rebalance my focus. I had some vacations but I also trained a lot, because I wanted to be ready for this restart of the Championship. So far we have had positive results but we still miss some better placement, therefore we must keep on improving and take the best out of our machine. We had a test here in Austria in July and my feeling was positive; the circuit is very fast, with a sort of ?old style? layout which is pretty much an on-and-off. This means it will be very demanding in terms of engine performance, on this side the GSX-RR has improved a lot since last year but for sure competitors with more powerful engines will have it easier. At the same time, very fast corners will be suitable for us, so I think we should try to work on that area and finalise the best set-up possible so that we can play our cards.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?When we came to Spielberg in July we could gather a lot of information and this is as precious as gold for us. The track is very peculiar, it is very fast and for this the most powerful engines will be eased, but has also some points where our chassis could be a positive weapon. The circuit has been rebuilt so that the tarmac is simply prefect: no bumps, no connections, its surface is smooth and clean. This will allow different lines and it will be interesting to see who will be the one to adapt better and quicker. After the test we could work on data and have already some ideas about the base set-up, but also the weather will play a role.?

Repsol Honda Team ready to discover Red Bull Ring following summer break

The long summer pause that followed the German GP allowed the Repsol Honda men to take a breath and recharge the batteries to start a busy second half of the season (eight races in 12 weeks before the season-ending Valencian round in November), with Marc Marquez leading the Championship and Dani Pedrosa fourth in the standings.

The MotoGP field will be back in action this weekend in Austria, where the series returns for the first time in 19 years. The circuit was built in 1969 and rebuilt in 1996 before hosting the MotoGP Championship for two years. In 2011 it was reopened as the Red Bull Ring Circuit, and it?s now one of five rounds on the calendar to host both the MotoGP and F1 Championships, together with Austin, Catalunya, Silverstone and Sepang.

Marc and Dani had the chance to ride a few laps at the circuit in June aboard the RC213V-S, and both enjoyed its fast and challenging layout and beautiful location.

Marc Marquez 93
?The holidays have been very good because we started the summer break knowing we had worked as well as possible with my team and with Honda in the first part of the season. I had some time off, resting and relaxing with my friends on the beach. Anyway, a quite hectic and challenging second half of the season is about to begin, requiring our total concentration and a lot of hard work, so I also spent some time preparing myself with cycling and supermotard training. Now I really look forward to getting back to racing my bike and to riding again at the Red Bull Ring. I had the chance to enjoy this amazing track twice, even if I wasn't riding my factory bike and of course I couldn't push as much as I like. It?s a circuit that?s quite enjoyable; some things about it remind me of Austin in that you have to brake very hard and stop the bike and turn quickly, but then there?s the last part that?s faster. I think it?s a good track for the World Championship and I can?t wait to ride there with a MotoGP bike. When you approach a weekend at a new circuit, it?s different and you have to be able to adapt as quickly as possible. I?m also proud to race there because my fan club will join us with many Austrian fans. I?m sure we'll have a great weekend and hopefully sunny weather.?

Dani Pedrosa 26

?The chance to spend some time on holiday with my friends has been very good but it?s now time to focus again on the work ahead. We went to the Red Bull Ring for some filming last June, and we were able to do a few laps on the RC213V-S, which is quite an amazing and fast bike. The circuit is in the middle of the woods, a beautiful place indeed. It?s short but it?s quite interesting because the width changes a lot so that there are very wide parts and some narrower ones. I would say the hardest thing is that there?s only one line and that makes overtaking difficult. Anyway there are two or three points at which there?s pretty hard braking and where you can overtake because the track is wide. It has a combination of corners that include more right-handers than left-handers, but above all there?s a long time where the bike flows a lot. It only stops hard at two corners. It?s nice to see how you go up the hill and then back down. It will be interesting racing at a new track and to see how our bike goes there. Hopefully we?ll be able to do a good job and have a good weekend.?

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Poised for Second Half of the MotoGP Season

After a three-week summer break, the Movistar Yamaha MotoGP team returns to the Red Bull Ring - Spielberg circuit with renewed energy to take on the competition this weekend at round ten of the MotoGP World Championship. This Sunday the Spielberg circuit will host its first MotoGP Grand Prix in nineteen years, but Movistar Yamaha MotoGP's Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi already got a first taste of the only ten corners comprising track during the two-day test three weeks ago.

Having been deprived from their YZR-M1s over the summer break, they are eager to head back to Austria this week to reunite with their bikes and prepare for the NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von ?sterreich.

Lorenzo booked steady progress during the first testing days in Spielberg and he aims to build on the already promising set up of his bike this week to make a strong comeback at the start of the second half of the season. Being in second place with a 48-point gap to close to the leader in the championship standings, the current World Champion's fighting spirit is as strong as ever and he is determined to give his all during the rest of the season.

Teammate Rossi had already ridden at the circuit before and secured his first ever podium at the Red Bull Ring for a third place in the 125cc class in 1996. This weekend he aims to visit the Austrian rostrum again and reduce the current 59-point margin to first place in the championship rankings. The summer break gave the nine-times World Champion time to unwind so he returns to the scene ready for action.

The Red Bull Ring - Spielberg circuit was originally built in 1969 and was rebuilt in 1996 to the track-layout it still has today. Its unique design of three left and seven right corners and a 626m longest straight puts the emphasis on top speed, acceleration and braking stability, which allows the riders plenty of opportunities to fully open the throttle and put on a show for the Austrian fans.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"We arrive in Austria with renewed energy after the summer break. We needed the time off to recharge our batteries and now we're looking forward to going back on track after a period of rest. It's always exciting to race at a circuit where we have no prior experience other than the two-day test held three weeks ago. Though we already determined that the track's lay-out might not play into Yamaha's strengths, we made good progress in finding a basic setting and we're looking forward to challenge at the front. Jorge and Vale have spent a large part of their time off on physical fitness training and preparing for the races to come. They are both in a good shape, so we feel ready to tackle the next nine rounds."
Jorge Lorenzo
Championship: 2nd, 122 points

"After the summer break we get back into action in Spielberg, a place we were able to check out for the first time three weeks ago during a two-days-test. I spent a few days' time on the Balearic Islands to relax but then I started to train again to get in the best shape to face the second half of the season. It's true that the situation is difficult because Marc is slightly ahead in the championship but we will do our best, as every year, to try and cut the distance. We will keep fighting until the end of the championship!"
Valentino Rossi
Championship: 3rd, 111 points

"It was a long break. I certainly rested a lot! I went on holiday but I continued to train. Now, however, I really want to get back on the track and do my best in this second half of the season. We have done good races up to this point. Some of them could have been better but we have proven that we're fast. The Austrian circuit is very nice and the tests went pretty well. The two long straights don't help us much, but during the race weekend we still have time to improve. We will do our best to get onto the podium."
Tech3 duo ready to kick-start second half of season at high speed Spielberg circuit

The Monster Yamaha Tech3 pairing of Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith optimistically aim to commence the second part of the year with two solid performances at Spielberg as the World Championship returns to Austria for the first time since 1997. The riders will battle at the rapid and undulating 4.3-kilometre venue that features three left corners and seven right. The track also has an altitude difference of 65 metres which promises a fast and spectacular 28 lap race on Sunday.

Pol Espargaro will seek to continue his impressive form in 2016 by following up his superb Suzuka 8 Hour victory with a strong finish in the round 10 Grand Prix. The young Spaniard currently holds the top satellite rider position in 6th in the championship standings and will look to consolidate this placement further. Meanwhile, Bradley Smith intends to get straight back into fight mode and begin the second half of the season with a notable result. The 25-year-old has experienced a challenging year so far but remains fully confident of his chances in the nine remaining MotoGP races.

Pol Espargaro
Championship: 6th, 72 points

"At last, the summer break is over and I can't wait to get back on my Yamaha as I want to continue my quest to complete the year as the top satellite MotoGP rider. It has been a busy few weeks for me because I flew to Japan for the Suzuka 8 Hours event after Sachsenring. Of course, I am delighted about my work there with Alex Lowes and Katsuyuki Nakasuga in the Factory Yamaha Racing Team, where we succeeded in winning the event for the second consecutive year. It was even more emotional than last year, as it was my final Suzuka race for Yamaha, but this performance has given me more determination to push harder on my YZR-M1 in MotoGP. Yet, after that, I also managed to have a holiday and relax a bit before we head to Austria. The Spielberg track looks really fun to ride with its fast flowing nature and elevation changes. However, I think it will be very competitive GP due to the straights and no doubt, the Ducatis will have a slight advantage there. Nevertheless, we aim to hit the ground running and give it everything we've got in order to leave this race with a good result in our back pocket. I am looking forward to the challenge."
Bradley Smith
Championship: 16th, 35 points

"The three-week break was nice for me and although I had some time to wind down, it wasn't for very long as I trained hard to be ready to get back to where I need to be in the second half of the season. This year has been tough at times, yet I am confident that I can turn it around, just like I did in 2014, and close my final year with the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team in a positive way. I am certain that our good fortune will start in Austria and even though I think it will be very tight in the race, I am highly motivated for the battle. I have done a lot of preparation for this track and with the fast flowing corners, it will be fun to ride on my Yamaha YZR-M1. The GP will be long with 28 laps, but I am excited to sample the track on my MotoGP bike after sampling the layout on a Yamaha R1 recently."

Espargaro positively gets up to speed on the opening day at Spielberg

Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team rider Pol Espargaro bolted into action during the first day of the Austrian GP and finished in 13th as he battled the rapid Spielberg circuit for the first time. The young Spaniard wasted no time in getting up to speed, despite having to learn the new venue on the 2016 MotoGP calendar. Nevertheless, he completed 25 laps in FP1, the joint highest number in the session, and ended the practice with a personal best that was only a second from the front. His progression continued in the afternoon as he carried on taking steps forward in preparation for Sunday. The 25-year-old upped his pace and eventually powered to a time that was just over half a second from 5th, marking a solid close to the opening day. The current leading satellite rider in the championship standings will seek to maintain his momentum tomorrow and clinch a top tier grid position for the 28-lap shootout.

On the other side of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 pit box, Bradley Smith began his round 10 campaign with a determined effort aboard the Yamaha YZR-M1 as he prepares for the first race on Austrian soil since 2007. The 25-year-old started his day by concluding the opening practice behind his teammate by only 0.115, as he grew accustomed to the undulating circuit on a MotoGP bike. In the afternoon, Smith relentlessly completed 27 laps as he focused on setting up his Yamaha for the GP and he finished with a lap time that was just one second from Word Champion, Jorge Lorenzo. The young Briton eyes up tomorrow with optimism as he confidently intends to undertake a positive qualifying performance.

Pol Espargaro - 2016"It's nice to be back on my M1 after the summer break and personally, I like the layout of the circuit a lot. It's fun to ride, flowing and the grip level is really high. There are a few critical points on the track and it's very fast, but it's definitely different to the places where we usually go racing and that makes it special. Having said that, I'm convinced that we didn't show our true potential today, as I still don't know the layout enough and I'm lacking some references. Therefore, I occasionally missed my braking points, especially after having put on new tyres. I felt a bit nervous on the bike and for sure my fastest lap time is quite far from where we could have been, yet the gap to the factory guys isn't too big and we have a lot of margin of improvement to make. It was very helpful to follow some other riders today and this was mainly what I tried to do in order to quickly obtain as much information as possible. After two sessions we now have a good base for the weekend and I'm looking forward to getting more laps under my belt tomorrow, plus I'm sure we will climb up in the rankings."

Position: 17th Time: 1'25.941 Laps: 50
Bradley Smith

Bradley Smith - 2016"I am happy to be working with the guys again and back racing after the summer break. With regards to our performance today, it?s clear to see that we have a bit more work to do and I?m a bit disappointed. I have to admit that we also didn?t make a big enough change in between the practice sessions which meant that it wasn?t possible to lower the lap time as much as the other guys. I think tyre life is going to be one of the main issues here this weekend. A lot of riders did short sprints today, but this afternoon I put in two fairly decent long runs and the endurance of the tyres seems to be a continuing issue. I?m a bit worried, and even more so if the temperature keeps on rising for the rest of the weekend, however, let's see what happens. It goes without saying that we want to improve our one lap pace, yet right now the sensible option is to try and work on something for the race distance. That is what we tried to do today, and we have some more work to do but I?m sure we can get closer to where we want to be tomorrow."

Petrux 6th, Scott 12th: Octo Pramac Yakhnich starts Red Bull Ring weekend well

In a day dominated by Ducati Team as Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone managed to create a vacuum in terms of gap (more than 6 tenths of a second between Vinales?s third and Iannone?s second place), Octo Pramac Yakhnich ended up well gaining a valuable sixth place with Danilo Petrucci and putting Scott Redding very close to the Top 10.
The summer break was abruptly ended today at Red Bull Ring (Austria) due to a very low temperature which created many difficulties to the riders, especially to push the tires in the optimum temperature.

Petrux still managed to go fast in the morning and after closing the FP1 ninth, in the last run of the FP2 he set the sixth fastest time (1'24.886) three tenths of a second from the front row.
After struggling early in the FP1 and working a lot on the set up in FP2, Scott has found a good feeling with his Ducati Desmosedici GP finishing in 12th position, only 101 milliseconds from the tenth place of the championship leader Marc Marquez.

12th - Scott Redding
1'25.140

I do not say that it was a difficult day. It's just the test conditions were completely different. At first I could not find feeling especially with the rear and I was a bit nervous. We tried to change bikes, twice, but we could not find particular advantages. I must say that the gap is not much from the Top 10 and if we can fix some details I think we can do well tomorrow, eventually even through Q1.

6th - Danilo Petrucci
1'24.886

A good day. We were always competitive although it was very cold and we were never able to warm the tires. We are fast and although we tried some things that did not go well, for sure we understand what is the way to go. We are in the top 10 but the gap is still so much and we want to improve tomorrow. I hope that the temperature will be a bit higher tomorrow because is not easy to run in these conditions.

VI?ALES & SUZUKI ECSTAR ON THE PACE IN AUSTRIA

Maverick Vi?ales put in a strong and consistent day of practice today ahead of Sunday?s Red Bull Ring MotoGP? 10th round in Austria to post third position aboard his GSX-RR, as team-mate Aleix Espargar? was unlucky to crash-out of FP2 early-on and couldn't complete the session, as the injuries he suffered required a medical investigation.

Vi?ales topped FP1 with a time of 1'25.866 with Espargar? in 15th (1'27.067), as both riders tested some new-design ?Winglets? on their machines. These are bigger than the standard ones, and this is meant to help the rider counterbalance the wheeling of the machine. In the afternoon?s final FP2, Vi?ales posted a much faster 1'24.471 on his final lap of 21, but Espargar?, who was in fifth position early on, only completed four laps and sits in 18th with a time of 1'25.945.

Following the crash, Espargar? needed further checks at the Medical Centre. The RX to his left hand highlighted a small fracture to the proximal phalanx of the third finger, which has been treated by fixing the third finger to the second finger with an elastic bandage. His right hand presents a sprain of the metacarpophalanx articulation of the right thumb; and this will be treated with physiotherapy. He will now undergo some medical treatment this evening and his situation will be evaluated further tomorrow morning.

Davide Brivio ? Team Manager:

?Unfortunately Aleix incurred a crash at a time he was feeling good and was making solid improvements with faster-and-faster lap-times. The crash generated a small fracture and he will need some physiotherapy this evening, so let?s wait to see how he will feel in the night and then tomorrow morning and together we will decide what to do. This was a pity because the day could have been fully positive because Maverick had a very positive first day. He?d been fast in both sessions, topping the sheets in the morning and being in the top-three in the afternoon; also his pace is positive. Maverick?s weekend has had a good start, but we need to continue improving and also keep an eye on the weather conditions; like temperature and rain. For the moment he feels comfortable, so let?s hope tomorrow we can recover Aleix and try to do a good weekend with the whole team.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?This morning was pretty hard with the tyres, the grip started to drop after one run and we tried to work on the set-up according to this. In the afternoon I wanted to test the hard tyre and finally the best lap came with that one, so my feeling is positive. Here, the machine works well with the grip, the new track helps in this, but we still need to work to finalise a compromise between pure performance and consistency in order not to stress too much ?tyre-thinking? in the race. Tomorrow we will probably better understand. We also tried new winglets today, they are meant to help me keep the front-end on the ground and give a better acceleration; my feelings on this are positive and we made a step forward.?

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Begin Austrian Adventure

The NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von ?sterreich got underway today as Movistar Yamaha MotoGP took to the Red Bull Ring - Spielberg circuit for the first official practice sessions.
Movistar Yamaha MotoGP teammates Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo made a solid start this morning in tricky conditions. Cold weather again proved to be the biggest challenge, with temperatures around only nine degrees Celsius as both Factory Yamaha riders focused on finding the perfect set-up for Sunday's race. They improved their times in the afternoon session and took fourth and eighth place respectively in the combined practice times.

Rossi secured his first World Championship podium of his career at the Spielberg circuit in 1996, with a third place in the 125cc class, and he clearly enjoyed returning to the venue twenty years later. The Doctor delivered a strong morning practice session, which saw him top the provisional results list for the majority of the time. After the session was briefly stopped due to a damaged air fence, he spent the remaining 12 minutes fine-tuning his bike's setting and secured fourth place with a 1'26.232s, 0.366s from the front.

The afternoon saw further improvements from the nine-time World Champion. He was riding consistently fast lap times as he tried to find the best lines on the track and a perfect balance for his YZR-M1 to go with it. He wrapped up the day in fourth with a personal best lap of 1'24.483, 0.866s from the fastest time of the day.

Teammate Lorenzo had a cautious start to the weekend. With chilly weather conditions and the tyres brought by Michelin being very different from the test three weeks ago, the Mallorcan used the first 45-minute free practice session to get a feel for the track. A late charge saw him end FP1 in seventh place with a 1'26.375s, 0.509s from first.

He was quick to resume his work during FP2. Consistently improving his pace, he bettered his morning time by over a second as he continued to perfect the set-up of his YZR-M1. With the temperature rising and the times dropping, he saved his best for the last stint when he breached into the 1'24's with a 1'24.988s, to end the day in eighth place, 1.371s from the front.

Untitled Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"We started FP1 with the setup we prepared three weeks ago during the test, but the conditions were very cold and the new tyres that Michelin brought are quite hard considering the temperatures. Due to this we had to almost start from zero again regarding our settings. For tomorrow it will be fundamental to reduce the gap, which is quite significant. To do so we'll study the data we collected today, especially as Jorge is not comfortable with his bike. Contrarily, Vale is more comfortable with it, though there are still opportunities to improve and I'm confident that we can make another step forward for tomorrow and I hope the weather will do so as well."
Valentino Rossi
4th / 1'24.483 / 46 laps

"There was a big difference compared to the test, with a lot lower temperatures out on the track. The bike was more difficult to ride and it was especially challenging to put in the tyre with the right grip. The first day was not so bad, it was actually quite positive because my pace was good. The biggest problem is that two factory rivals are very strong so we need to work and give the maximum to try to reduce the gap tomorrow. The tyres that Michelin brought here are better than the ones at the test, the allocation is OK. The problem is that we don't have summery weather anymore, it's another season, so we have to wait and hope for good weather tomorrow and especially on Sunday."
Jorge Lorenzo
8th / 1'24.988 / 43 laps

"There's a difference between us and our rivals, but you know you have to work on your own bike and your own pace to try to improve it and that's what we did. We tried to modify the bike and improve by some tenths and we got a good pace. We didn't put the softer tyre on the rear like some other riders, so we have some margin to be even closer. Especially in the morning it was very cold and it's only been on a few occasions that it was colder than today. It was tricky because we had to be careful in some corners to avoid crashing. In the afternoon it was a little bit better, with the temperature a few degrees higher, so we had a better feeling but we hope tomorrow the sun will shine a bit more and we'll have more confidence."

With regards to our performance today, it's clear to see that we have a bit more work to do and I'm a bit disappointed. I have to admit that we also didn't make a big enough change in between the practice sessions which meant that it wasn't possible to lower the lap time as much as the other guys. I think tyre life is going to be one of the main issues here this weekend. A lot of riders did short sprints today, but this afternoon I put in two fairly decent long runs and the endurance of the tyres seems to be a continuing issue. I'm a bit worried, and even more so if the temperature keeps on rising for the rest of the weekend, however, let's see what happens. It goes without saying that we want to improve our one lap pace, yet right now the sensible option is to try and work on something for the race distance. That is what we tried to do today, and we have some more work to do but I'm sure we can get closer to where we want to be tomorrow."

Austrian GP gets underway for Repsol Honda Team at cold Red Bull Ring

It was a busy first day at the Austrian GP for Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, as they rode the RC213V at the Red Bull Ring for the first time, in ambient temperatures that only reached a chilly 15? C and a track temperature of 18? C.

Marc was sixth fastest this morning, while Dani struggled to find a good pace in the even cooler temperatures and suffered a turn 9 crash from which he thankfully escaped uninjured. This afternoon the Repsol Honda pair focused their work on the setup, choosing to ride the whole session without changing their Michelin tyres, a soft-front, hard-rear combination for Marc and a soft-soft pairing for Dani.

Tomorrow will see the second day of action at the Red Bull Ring, with weather forecasts showing much higher temperatures, and both Marc and Dani are confident they?ll improve their pace and speed as they get completely familiar with the new track.

Marc Marquez 93
10th / 1'25.039

?It has basically been a day to gather data for the race and to find the reference points with a MotoGP bike for this track, which is new. It?s short but it has many braking points, and we haven?t ridden here with carbon brakes before. All in all, I?m generally happy with how it went today; we?re tenth but it?s not our real position, as we didn?t use a new and softer rear spec tyre. We?ll continue working in the same direction tomorrow, as I think it?s the right one, with the aim to be at least in the top five and to fight for the podium on Sunday.?

Dani Pedrosa 26
19th / 1'26.130

?It has been a demanding day with such low temperatures. I particularly struggled this morning and I had quite a fast crash, losing time and honestly also some confidence. Things went a bit better this afternoon, with a little warmer temperature, even if it was still difficult to put heat in the tyres. The fact that we didn?t know the track so well didn?t help either, but we?ll continue working and we look to improve tomorrow.?

Scott will start from the 3rd row at the Red Bull Ring. Danilo 13th after a great fight in Q1

At the end of the #AustrianGP qualifying, which saw the Ducati of Andrea Iannone wins a fantastic pole position, Octo Pramac Yakhnich can rejoice in the precious 8th place finish gained by Scott Redding while Danilo Petrucci missed the qualification to Q2 for the first time this season.

Scott confirmed the improvements recorded in the Fp2 and since the morning he was very effective winning a convincing Q2 with the fitfh quickest lap-time of the free practices. In qualifying for the pole position, the British rider was able to lower other two tenths bis best morning laptime but the crono of 1'23.777 was not enough to beat the competition from Crutchlow and gain the park fermee as first Independent rider. Good news even from the race pace of the FP4 (8th quickest time).

For Petrux a step back from the beautiful FP2 (6th time) played yesterday. The rider of the Fiamme Oro ended in 11th position the FP3 and after leading Q1 for a long time, he had to surrender to competition from Laverty and Crutchlow. The time of 1'24.123 (that would have earned him direct qualification to Q2) will force Petrux starting in 13th position tomorrow.

8th - Scott Redding
1'23.777

I'm really happy with today considering the position we were in yesterday. I did not feel confident but this morning we worked a lot and in the afternoon, as the temperature was raising, it put me in a strange position between the hard and the soft front tire. In Q2 with the soft front tire I felt a lot of closing on the front and probably I left there a couple of thents. Now we have to think about the race and decide which will be the best option according to the temperatures.

6? - Danilo Petrucci
1'24.886

I?m very disappointed because in the last two races I had found a good feeling with the bike. But in tracks like this one where you brake hard, even if the braking is one of my strengths, I can not be effective in the slower corners entry. We'll try to work for tomorrow. Yesterday things had gone well but I felt to be a little far in term of crono. I will not give up, I want to be in the Top 10. We'll try to do something better especially for braking where I have not a good feeling.

STRONG MotoGP? QUALIFYING FOR VI?ALES & ESPARGAR?

Team SUZUKI ECSTAR?s Maverick Vi?ales and Aleix Espargar? both put together strong performances today in the final qualifying sessions for the Red Bull Ring MotoGP? World Championship 10th round in Austria, claiming second and third-row starts.

Vi?ales clocked sixth position on his GSX-RR while Espargar? ? riding with a fractured finger and damaged hand ? scored an impressive ninth overall, despite the limitations caused by his fall yesterday.

Both Spaniards automatically qualified through from FP3 to the final Q2 with Vi?ales third on a lap-time of 1?23.755 and Espargar? seventh with a 1?24.108 lap, but in Q2 both improved their times to 1?23.584 and 1?23.813 respectively.

The improvements done with the introduction of new, bigger winglets allowed both riders to find more efficiency in acceleration and keeping the gap from the leaders very small: In particular, Vi?ales had a consistently-strong pace in all today?s sessions, also managing to test his pace for the race and get the final feeling from the hard tyres.

Espargar? did a great job riding his machine with the pain he is suffering: Although yesterday?s medical investigation found him unfit to race, the job done with Clinica Mobile - and a night of rest - allowed him to recover feeling and functionality, finally being allowed to take the track this morning. His efforts were evident, but his determination allowed him to put a positive time-attack and also find a comfortable pace.

Davide Brivio:

?Thinking towards the race we are not in a bad position. Maverick will jump from the second row, it?s a position that leaves the options open for a good performance; and also because during the whole sessions today he proved to have a good pace. We hope we will be able to take advantage in the race from this work that has been done. Maybe we missed something in qualifying, maybe we were expecting something better, but we couldn?t succeed in exploiting all our potential.

?Aleix, until this morning? we didn?t even know if he could ride a bike and finally he did, and he really ?bit-the-bullet? and could qualify on the third row. We really have to thank him for the great effort and the courage he showed in getting on the bike after yesterday?s crash. Tomorrow he will have to endure further effort and this will be the hardest as the race will be long and so we will see. We must also thank all the Clinica Mobile?s staff, Doctor Zasa and Doctor Mir, who really supported him and allowed us to have our rider competitive.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?Honestly, I thought I could have been in a better position. The temperature has ?gotten higher and the grip dropped, and this was a little problem for our machine that struggled to find the good grip. In the afternoon I felt less-competitive than in the morning. However, in FP4, we did a great job, focusing on the pace with the hard tyre and a full tank of fuel, preparing the race. For tomorrow we will see about the weather; I hope it?s ?gonna be colder than today so that I can get the best from my machine. The winglets gave me positive feelings and improvements but we still miss some acceleration.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?After yesterday?s crash it was not easy to ride today, but finally I could make it and I?m happy. It?s a pity because when we were here for the test I really enjoyed it and I felt this track could be suitable for our machine and style, and also yesterday, in FP2, I felt competitive. Unfortunately, the crash injured me and this morning I had a lot of pain. I didn?t have any injections today, but I got some oral pain killers but this makes me feel weak and tired. Having the injury on my left hand makes it complicated to use the clutch, so I?m happy in MotoGP we don?t need to use it to change gear. Despite this, my feelings with the bike are positive, we are not so far from the leaders; and the race-pace I tested in FP4 was consistent and fast.?

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Score Second and Fourth in Scintillating Shoot-out in Spielberg

The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP put up a strong fight for the front row in today's Q2 session ahead of tomorrow's NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von ?sterreich. Valentino Rossi took second position in qualifying at the Red Bull Ring - Spielberg circuit. Teammate Jorge Lorenzo looked on course to take pole position, until the times dropped at the end of the session and he found himself in fourth place.

Rossi took his time to leave the pits for the qualifying session, exiting just before Lorenzo. The nine-time World Champion got straight down to business, scoring a temporary fourth place on his first flying lap with a 1'24.648s, before being pushed back one place by his teammate. He continued to improve his time on his second and third attempt before entering the pits for fresh rubber with six and a half minutes on the clock, in seventh place.

He rushed back out two minutes later, breaking into the 1'23's with a 1'23.843s to move up to sixth place and continued to impress with his last two flying laps. With nothing to lose, the Doctor spurred on his Yamaha to secure a brilliant third position and crossed the line just a few seconds before the end of the session, giving him one last chance to set a hot lap and Rossi made it count. A stunning 1'23.289s saw him claim provisional pole until he was pushed back by a late charge from chasing rival Andrea Iannone, leaving him just 0.147s from first.

Lorenzo was the second to last rider to exit the pit lane today in qualifying, waiting for the pack to go out before he hit some clear space on track. The Mallorcan chose to go out with the soft front, medium option rear tyre and scored a best time of 1'23.639s to take second in the provisional standings on his second lap. Lorenzo then returned to the pits with more than seven and a half minutes remaining.

After a minute he was back on course to challenge for pole position. Now in third place, he found the perfect spot on track to jump to the top of the charts with a 1'23.361s. He was unable to improve on his last two laps, but his best time was so impressive that it was not bettered until the final seconds of the session. The current World Champion missed out on the front row by just 0.063s, taking fourth place.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"After the challenging test and first day, today's unexpected but very positive results pay tribute to the hard work of the team and the progress they made. We have made improvements to the setting session by session and it gave the riders the confidence they were looking for to challenge for the front row in qualifying. Vale delivered a really strong performance in Q2 and set various great flying laps at the end of the session for second place. Jorge was also very competitive today and missed out on the front row by just a very tiny margin. We will now try to make some final amendments on both sides of the garage to be ready for tomorrow's warm-up. It won't be easy to make another big step, but we think there is still a margin for improvement."
Valentino Rossi
2nd / 1'23.289 / 9 laps

"I tried to push where my bike is very good, in the last sector and T3, and we worked well today from this morning, which was a difficult practice. We improved a lot and already in free practice four I was third behind our fastest rivals. We were able to make another small step for the qualifying, which gave me a better feeling so I could push a little bit more to stay in the center of the front row. To split our main factory competitors was a great target and I did a great lap so I'm happy."
Jorge Lorenzo
4th / 1'23.361 / 9 laps

"How things can change in MotoGP is just unbelievable, in just one day! Everything can affect the results and today the conditions helped us a lot. Our main rivals didn't improve their lap times a lot and we improved by a great difference, more than a second, and that's why we were closer and able to fight for pole position. I was very happy with the progression and the lap time. I thought I could be on the first row or even in first position, but finally in the last moment they overtook me. Still, second row is a good place, better than we expected before starting the Grand Prix."
Tech3 duo ready for Austrian GP despite challenging qualifying

Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team rider Bradley Smith undertook a solid recovery from what was an uphill start yesterday in the 10th round of the MotoGP World Championship. The 25-year-old, who endured a tough opening to the day at the undulating Spielberg circuit, concluded the first session in 17th as he completed 22 laps. However, the English rider remained resolute and after the changes the team undertook, Smith delivered a promising performance in FP4 before attacking as soon as Qualifying One began. His personal best lap was shy of the cut-off point for Q2 by just over a tenth of a second, however, he made a huge improvement of 1.815 on yesterday's FP2 time. In addition, this result would have left him just outside the top ten in qualifying 2. The British star remains focused and optimistic of picking up a strong finish tomorrow and will commence the Austrian Grand Prix from fifth row of the grid.

On the other side of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team pit box, Pol Espargaro gave his all despite struggling to adjust his Yamaha YZR-M1 to the challenging Austrian circuit and will kick off his Grand Prix battle from right behind his teammate. The Spaniard leapt straight into action this morning and delivered 21 laps as he posted his quickest time on his final run, however, this lap resulted in him having to compete in Qualifying One in the afternoon. The 2013 Moto2 World Champion charged away when the shootout began and eventually set his personal best on the 6th lap out of 7, which saw him finish behind his teammate by 0.139. Nevertheless, despite the tricky qualifying, Espargaro remains confident for the 28-lap sprint tomorrow.

Bradley Smith
14th / 1'24.126 / 9 laps

"We have gained some more experience and track time which means that we were faster today, even if we didn't have the best start to this weekend. Yet, I am satisfied with my performance because we made a big step from yesterday with regards to the lap time, which I cut by just under two seconds today. In FP4, I began to find a better rhythm than what we had so far this weekend, which of course, is pleasing. It goes without saying that we are going to try to improve the Yamaha this evening so that we can have a more consistent bike for tomorrow. Yet, on the whole, the team has done a fantastic job, so I must say thanks to them because we're all in this situation together and we are trying as hard as we can. I believe that we have a solid race pace that will enable me to fight inside the top ten, so I need to concentrate on a good start and then we'll see what happens from there."
Pol Espargaro
15th / 1'24.265 / 7 laps

"It didn't quite go to plan today but we are making steps forward, even if they are small ones compared to the other riders. However, I must say that it's tricky to set the bike up at this track because of its hard braking points and this is where we are struggling the most. The team and I are trying as many solutions as possible in the few sessions that we have available before qualifying, but until now we haven't found the right combination or direction. This hard braking issue is the reason why I am losing time in sector one and two as these sectors feature some key points. I tried to follow some other riders but that wasn't easy for me to do, so as a result, we will start from 15th tomorrow. Still, I am confident that we can amend the current situation and we will use the warm-up to refine the setting in order to be as competitive as possible for the race, even if I haven't given myself an easy task on the grid."

Scott brings Octo Pramac Yakhnich to the Parc Ferm?e on the day of the Ducati?s triumph

Octo Pramac Yakhnihc gains an awesome place at the Red Bull Ring?s Parc Ferme? to celebrate the historic 1-2 finish by Andrea Iannone and Andrea Dovizioso. At the end of a great race, the British rider wins eighth place but especially the 1st Independent Team prize in '# AustrianGP
Danilo Petrucci?s 11th place is a good result because conquered at the end of a difficult weekend in which Petrux didn?t manage to give his best.

After losing some positions in the first lap, Scott began to lap under the 1'26 consistently managing to recover up to the ninth position. After the black flag of Barber?, the # 45 started chasing Laverty and passed him on lap 17 to put himself behind the factory riders. The duel with Smith was exciting. In the last 7 laps Smith had managed to reduce the gap to 4/10. But Redding did very well to stay focused and finish his Sunday with his team at Parc Ferme?.

A difficult start with some mistakes did not allow Petrux to remain glued to Top 10 train. In the second part of the race, however, Danilo reacted well, managing to pass Aleix Espargaro. In the last corner, preparing his attack to Laverty, losing the fron Petrux was forced to leave the brakes and was unable to avoid the contact with Eugene who crashed out.

8? - Scott Redding

11th - Danilo Petrucci

First of all I want to apologize to Eugene for hitting him. I did not want to pass him, I was just trying to attack, but I lost the front and I had to leave the brakes. I'm really sorry

It has been a very difficult weekend. I never found the right set up. The pace race was nota s bad but I did too many mistakes in the first few laps. Thank God this week end it?s over. Brno is in a week and I can?t wait to run.

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Returns to Form with Austrian Podium Fight

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo made a stunning return to form today, taking third in the NeroGiardini Motorrad Grand Prix von ?sterreich at the Red Bull Ring - Spielberg circuit. Valentino Rossi was also setting an impressive pace as he followed his teammate for most of the race and claimed valuable points with a fourth place finish.

Starting from fourth on the grid, Lorenzo catapulted from the line but was clipped by Marc Marquez going turn one, but despite being pushed wide the Mallorcan made a quick dash to the front and joined the front fight between Rossi, Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone and skillfully put his YZR-M1 in second place behind the latter. The Factory Yamaha rider was eager to hit the front, making multiple overtaking manoeuvres but it wasn't to last and he had to let Dovizioso past.

With a small margin forming between him and the front two riders and Rossi tapping on the back of his YZR-M1, Lorenzo responded by setting his best personal lap of the race thus far with 14 laps remaining, and soon the blue bikes were back in contention for the win. A brief state of grace saw the Yamaha riders running within 0.8s of the race leaders, but towards the end the Michelin tyres dropped, affecting the pace. Unable to challenge the front riders, the current World Champion decided to focus on defending his podium position and brought his bike over the line in third place, 3.389s from first.

Rossi lost a place at the start of the 28-lap race from second on the grid, but was soon moving to re-overtake Dovizioso in turn 6 and fought with Iannone at the end of the lap to lead over the line. What followed was a flurry of activity with Lorenzo joining the fight. The Doctor ran wide on turn 1 with 25 laps to go and dropped to fifth behind Marquez, but it didn't take him long to move up to fourth place when he set a provisional fastest lap, being the first rider to clock a 1'24s, two laps later.

Back behind his teammate, the Italian made his experience count and bided his time, sticking close to his teammate's YZR-M1. The two Yamahas were charging to the front two-thirds into the race and piled on the pressure, but as the tyres started to wear they were forced to slightly ease off their pace. Unable to make a move on Lorenzo, the nine-time World Champion decided to harvest some valuable points for the championship, finishing in fourth place 3.815s from the front.

The third place finish keeps Lorenzo in second place in the standings on 138 points, 43 points from first, whilst Rossi remains in third position with 124 points.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director

"It has been a positive race, especially if you consider the challenging start we had on Friday. The team has done a great job, though it is a shame our strong pace couldn't be rewarded by having two riders on the podium after such a strong ride by both of them. Jorge took a good podium result with Valentino not far behind and we finished in front of Marquez with both riders so we made up some important points for the championship. We are looking forward to the next race in Brno in one week's time where we always have been strong."
Jorge Lorenzo
3rd / +3.389 / 28 laps, 2nd / 138 points

"Honestly, when you have one or two challenging races like me, finishing in third place is not the same as a victory, but it almost feels the same because our rivals were almost in another world during the test and throughout the weekend, in qualifying and also the second part of the race. To finally finish in third place just three seconds from the winner is a great result and we are very satisfied with the work we did on the bike and the concentration I kept during the race with the rear tyre moving a lot in the last part. I'm very happy and we should keep working, we recovered some points to Marc and it's important for the championship. Anything can happen, like we saw yesterday. Marc crashed and almost got seriously injured. We need to stay focused and have some luck and wait."
Valentino Rossi
4th / +3.815 / 28 laps, 3rd / 124 points

"In the end it was a good race because the margin to our rivals in front was not very big. It was a shame that I wasn't able to fight with Lorenzo. I wanted to try and arrive on the podium, but in the end I wasn't able to do so and for sure I'm not happy about this, but for the rest it was a good weekend. We were quite competitive at this track, which is not fantastic for Yamaha, and we took some points. Our rhythm in the race was very similar to those who took the victory and we will try to be stronger next week in Brno. For me, personally, Brno is a great track where I won for the first time, but the last few years I wasn't strong enough so I'm very curious to understand if this year I can be more competitive. About today's frontrunners, I think they will also be very strong in Brno because they are always fast and the track also has a lot of straights and it's so fast, so I think we have to keep an eye on them."
Smith and Espargaro turn around tricky weekend with top ten finishes in Austria

Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team rider Bradley Smith delivered a fully determined performance today at the Austrian Grand Prix to clinch 9th in front of more than 95,000 enthusiastic spectators. The British star leapt forward from the middle of the fifth row of the grid and after navigating his way through the frantic first lap, he crossed the finish line in 11th. Shortly afterwards, Smith slipped back two positions but pushed onwards before moving up to 10th at the halfway point. He sustained his strong rhythm and closed down the gap to Laverty before gliding past him on lap 17 and then comfortably pulling away. The 25-year-old continued to lap at an impressive pace right until the chequered flag and was unlucky to just miss out on the top independent position by three-tenths of a second. Nevertheless, the result marks a positive close to a previously challenging weekend for the British rider.

On the other side of the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team garage, Pol Espargaro pulled off a positive recovery charge to complete the round 10 fight at the spectacular Spielberg circuit in 10th. The 2013 Moto2 World Champion kicked off his campaign from the fifth row of the grid after a tricky qualifying and concluded the opening lap in 14th. He then upped his pace as he aimed to climb through the field and his strong rhythm saw him rise to 13th with nine laps completed. Next in his sights was Danilo Petrucci who the Spaniard expertly closed down and shot past six laps later. He remained consistent and he continued to push, before overtaking Aleix Espargaro on lap 23, and then Eugene Laverty one lap later. Espargaro then comfortably opened a gap and crossed the finish line one position behind his teammate.

Bradley Smith
9th / +29.785 / 28 laps, 14th / 42 points

"Overall, I have to be happy with the result and we really turned things around today. Having said that, I am also a little bit disappointed because the top satellite position was the aim, especially after the pace that we had in warm-up and I knew that we had a good chance. I was lucky at the beginning of the GP with all the jumps starts around me but I lost a large amount of time on the opening lap and then there were quite a few mistakes by other riders, which cost me. I was pleased that I managed to cut the gap to Laverty and Redding and I believe that I was really strong in the middle part of the Grand Prix. The only issue was that I put a lot of stress on my tyres to close that deficit to those riders. As we weren't too sure about the fuel consumption, we had to play it safe and slightly dial down some of the power, which meant that I wasn't able to get close enough to Redding to make a full attack. However, we already knew it would be a challenging weekend, but from where we were on Friday to where we are now, it's clear to see that we've made a big step and I have to say that I'm very proud."
Pol Espargaro
10th / +37.094 / 28 laps, 8th / 78 points

"It goes without saying that 10th position is a long way from where we want to be but we still have to look at the positive points, especially after a challenging weekend like this. It was the first time this season that we were not as competitive as we should have been, yet we managed to increase the gap to our direct revivals in the Best Independent Rider battle with Barbara and Crutchlow. However, we were not able to completely solve the difficulties that we had to face in the last two days, but still, we went for the best compromise which enabled me to improve my pace unlike in the practice sessions. Fortunately, now we are going straight to Brno, which is a track that suits the Yamaha's style a lot better and where we have a lot of data from the previous years. Therefore, I am sure that my feeling on the YZR-M1 will once again be as good as it was in Germany."

TOP-6 FOR VI?ALES AT RED BULL RING MotoGP?

Maverick Vi?ales put in a strong and spirited performance to finish sixth in today?s MotoGP? Red Bull Ring World Championship race in Austria as team-mate Aleix Espargar? was forced to pull-out suffering with the effects of a fractured finger incurred in a fall on Friday.

Vi?ales ? who set the fastest lap of the race at one stage - stayed with the leading group of six riders that broke free from the rest of the pack early on, and spent most of the race locked in a battle with series leader Marc Marquez, but the Suzuki rider couldn?t quite make the pass. The positive jump at the start and effectiveness in early corners marked an improvement in his riding, and Vi?ales reported a very good feeling with the machine for the first half of the race.

Both riders were in the leading group in the early stages of the 28-lap race, but as the race entered the closing stages, Espargar?, who had battled pain in yesterday?s qualifying sessions, had to pull into the pits with four laps to go. His efforts were remarkable over the whole weekend, but the progressive drop of tyre performance generated an instability in the machine that made his riding too demanding for the injured hand.

Satoru Terada ? Project Leader:

?After the test we made here we worked hard in the Factory and we delivered some new parts, in particular the bigger winglets. We know we need to find some better acceleration and this was an attempt in this direction; it proved to be effective so the direction was correct, but we still need to find better improvements. Today?s race was a little under expectations after the practice, both riders had a very positive pace but the race was difficult as we had issues with ?spinning? that affected the acceleration. Despite this, Aleix made a huge effort riding with the injured hand and although he couldn?t finish the race he could give us precious feedback about the machine; he did a hard and efficient job and we are very thankful to him. Maverick also had a very positive weekend, he?s been consistently within the fastest times and also in the race, he could keep in touch with the leaders, but unfortunately he suffered this weakness of the acceleration that we are experiencing, so this is definitely an area we will continue to work on.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?We did more than half the race with the leading group and I really felt confident and comfortable, I tried to overtake for fifth place but I lacked in effectiveness on the straight so I couldn't succeed; it?s a pity because I could have maybe caught-up to fourth. In the second part of the race the problem became bigger so I settled for sixth. We will need to verify the data to better understand the tyre drop as the rear tyre looked very worn. I?m satisfied because when we had full performance from the grip we were very competitive, this wasn?t an easy track for us so we need to improve the overall performance if we want to be even more competitive, but being only 14 seconds from the winner in such a ?stop-and-go? track ? and which is not the most suitable for us - it?s a positive result.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?It?s been a very, very hard race for me and finally I had to retire. I tried all I could but the hand hurt too much. In the first part of the race I was pretty confident, the jump at the start was very good, even though I was worried about it, and I felt confident with the bike in the early laps as I could follow with a good pace. The problems became bigger when the tyres got worn; this caused more-and-more instability to the machine, as it is normal, therefore requiring much more force on the handlebars, which obviously became a problem for my injured finger. I hoped to be able to end the race, but my pace became too slow and there was no point in risking a further crash. Furthermore, we are going to race in Brno next week, so I need to be sensible and try to recover as soon as possible. I?m really sorry, but with the team we did a good job and I felt very comfortable with the bike, plus the Suzuki Factory did a great job in delivering us new winglets in such a short time.?
