SUZUKI ECSTAR READY FOR MOTORLAND ARAGON

Team SUZUKI ECSTAR heads back to Spain this weekend for the third time this year and the last European race before the overseas leg of the MotoGP? Championship. The spectacular Motorland Aragon circuit will be the scene of the 14th round, with its variety of characteristics that makes it very challenging for technicians and demanding but fun for the riders.

Maverick Vi?ales arrives in Alca?iz after the historic victory at Silverstone and a solid race in Misano. The previous round in Sam Marino had been a positive performance on a circuit where the characteristics of the track weren?t the most suitable for the GSX-RR; fifth place gave him positive points for the championship, but also signalled the capabilities of the team to finalise a well-performing machine.

The Spanish round in Aragon will also be a good change for improvements for Aleix Espargar?. His struggle to finalise an effective strategy influenced his race in Misano, in particular the feeling with the front tyre, but the characteristics of the Motorland circuit will give him another chance to continue with the good steps forward he has made in the latest races.

The Motorland Circuit of Aragon is a modern facility that was remodelled in 2010 to fulfil the security and standards requested by the MotoGP? organisation. The origins of the Grand Prix have their roots in a solid history of street racing in Alca?iz and the circuit has hosted events between 1963 and 2003. Eventually it was modernised by renowned German circuit architect Hermann Tilke.

The track is 5.077km (3.16 miles) long and has 17 turns: 10 left-handers and seven right-handers. The longest straight is 968 m (3175.85 ft.) and the Grand Prix will be raced over 23 laps, which correspond to a total length of 116.8 km or 72.7 miles.

Maverick Vi?ales:

?The Motorland circuit is a very interesting one, it has a variety of areas that make it a demanding but fun layout. We arrive here with a positive feeling, the victory at Silverstone gave us an extra injection of confidence and in Misano we did the best we could considering the conditions. Also, Aragon is tricky regarding the weather; it could be cold or extremely hot. Some races ago we were more worried about hot temperatures, but after Misano we can approach this with more confidence, as we finally proved we can be competitive in high temperatures; and that was one of the things we were worried about previously.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?Unfortunately in Misano I made the wrong choice of the tyre and this resulted in a bad race, but we had many positives from the work we?ve done. The machine has improved a lot and in many situations I feel really comfortable now. We are doing a good job and if we manage to make a further step we can be really competitive. Aragon will be important because it?s the last one before the three back-to-back races, and the circuit is a nice one. It is a mix of the most famous parts of many other circuits and this makes it very enjoyable to ride. Also, our machine is improving in performance and effectiveness so I hope we can enjoy more positive results.?

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Eager to Continue Action in Arag?n

After securing a double podium at Movistar Yamaha MotoGP's second home Grand Prix at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli nearly two weeks ago, the team shapes up for the Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n. The fourteenth Grand Prix of the season at the MotorLand Arag?n circuit holds a special significance as it's not just a home race for Lorenzo but the team's title sponsor, Movistar, has also taken title sponsorship of the Arag?n round for a third year in succession.

After a strong race at his home Grand Prix where he secured second place, Rossi aims for another top result in Arag?n, where he secured a podium finish in 2013 and 2015 with two third places. Over the last four races, he has been gradually reducing the margin to the championship leader to 43 points in the overall standings. This weekend the nine-time World Champion aims to hit the ground running on Friday, as he looks forward to another exciting battle with the frontrunners.

Teammate Lorenzo also arrives in Arag?n with high hopes to continue the momentum of the last round at his penultimate home race of the season. His third place finish at the last round in Misano keeps the Mallorcan in third place in the championship, 18 points behind his teammate. He is eager to add another podium result to his tally at the MotorLand Arag?n circuit, scoring two consecutive wins over the last two years, two second places in 2012 and 2013, and a third place podium finish in 2011.

The MotorLand Arag?n circuit was added to the MotoGP calendar in 2010 and was given the IRTA Best Grand Prix of the Year award that same year. Situated near the town of Alca?iz in Northern Spain, the track is only a few hours drive from Barcelona and draws thousands of fans. The fast and challenging 5.1 km long circuit, with ten left and seven right corners and a 968 m longest straight, has one of the most spectacular elevation changes of the season and multiple flowing corners, making finding the right set-up vital.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"We arrive in Arag?n feeling positive that we can make this a great weekend. We go from our team and Valentino's home Grand Prix to the home race of Jorge and our title sponsor Movistar, so it will be another very special event that we are looking forward to. Our riders both like the Arag?n circuit and the team's work ethic is as high as ever, so we feel confident that we can be ready for another close battle."
Valentino Rossi
Championship: 2nd, 180 points

"Even though I wanted to win in Misano, I can say that it was a good race anyway. In all the next races we will do our best to get always the best result, just like we did in Misano. The only thing that interests me now is to do good races. In Arag?n we will have to work well from day one, as we have been doing this entire season. This circuit has fast corners and hard braking, so it will be important to have a good bike, with a perfect set-up. I really like the track and, even if it is not one of my favourites, we will try to do our best."
Jorge Lorenzo
Championship: 3rd, 162 points

"Despite the high expectations in Misano, we finally could come back to the podium after some bad races. In Misano we worked really well throughout the weekend but ultimately Dani and Vale were faster than us. At least we got another podium and we found the line regarding the setting with the bike. Now it's time to go to Arag?n. This track never suits our bike perfectly but over the last years we were able to win several times so you never know, especially this season with the new tyres everything is challenging and tricky. I'm eager to fight on home soil and I will try to taste victory again."
Espargaro and Lowes keen for Aragon contest

Monster Yamaha Tech3 team riders Pol Espargaro and Alex Lowes eye up the forthcoming race at the MotorLand Aragon GP confidently as they aim to battle to two notable results aboard their Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP bikes. The 14th event on the 2016 calendar will take place at the ultra-modern circuit that is located approximately 250km north-west of Barcelona in the inland of Spain, where a passionate crowd is expected on Sunday.

Pol Espargaro fully intends to achieve the top independent rider honours in front of his fans in this weekend's Grand Prix ahead of the triple flyaway races. The Spaniard, who returned to the top ten at the last outing in San Marino after producing a solid effort, is currently six points behind the leading satellite rider in the championship standings, but will seek to edge ahead by securing a top eight finish in Aragon.

Meanwhile, Alex Lowes will ride in the Monster Yamaha Tech3 colours at Aragon where he will once again stand in for the recuperating Bradley Smith. The young Briton, who competed in Germany this weekend at the 10th round of the WSBK Championship, will switch from his Factory Yamaha R1 to the Yamaha YZR-M1 as he targets a point scoring result to highlight his learning progress in the world's highest category of motorcycle racing.

Pol Espargar?
Championship: 9th, 88 points

"For sure, I am very excited to get back on Spanish soil and put on a good show for my home crowd at Aragon. The circuit is really impressive, super modern and great fun to ride, plus it is a track that is physically demanding where we have to constantly ride on the limit. With regards to my ambition, of course, the main aim is to win the top independent rider battle and move back into the lead in the satellite standings. I have some positive memories of Aragon as I finished three times on the podium, which also includes two victories, and it would be great if I could add another strong performance to that list. Every race this season has underlined how crucial the qualifying is and in terms of positions, I've had some competitive showings there on the M1, as I started from 4th on two occasions in the previous years. Therefore I hope we can hit the ground running on Friday, just like we did in Misano, and keep this form over the weekend so that I can give my fans something to cheer about!"
Alex Lowes
Championship: 23rd, 3 points

"I am delighted to be able to have another outing on the Yamaha YZR-M1 with Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team and I truly aim to repay the team with a strong performance on Sunday. It's incredible how much I've learnt with this opportunity over the last two races and I have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I feel that step-by-step it makes me more of a complete rider, and the knowledge I have gained on the M1 will surely continue to help me in my day job in the World Superbike championship. Fortunately, Aragon is another circuit that I know, even if we only used the MotoGP track layout for the first time this season in World Superbikes, but I'm sure it will feel different to ride on the YZR-M1, especially the last corner. In any case, the goal of the weekend remains the same because, in the previous two GP's, I just wanted to gain as much information as possible. After racing the Yamaha R1 in Germany this weekend, it will certainly take me a few laps to re-adapt to the Yamaha YZR-M1, yet I can't wait to get FP1 underway and ride the fantastic bike on the Spanish circuit."

Positive Friday for Petrux at Aragon.Scott needs to find grip and feeling
The Motorland of Aragon confirms to be a good circuit for Danilo Petrucci who managed to stay permanently in the Top 10, both in the morning (7th time) and in the afternoon (9th) on the first day of free practices. Petrux has set good lap-times with both the hard rubber, used in the last run of the morning, and the soft one, with whom he registered the ninth quickest time in the afternoon, less than two tenths of a second behind the second row.

For Scott Redding, however, it was a difficult friday at #AragonGp, he ended up with the 16th lap-time in Fp2. For the British rider, there were low grip issues on the rear, that affected his feeling in most areas of the circuit too.

16th - Scott Redding
1?49.680

It was a very difficult day. I found absolutely no grip. With the new tire, or the used one, I did not find any differences. There is so much spin, even on the out lap and when the tires begin to be used, things get considerably worse. I have to work a lot with the gas to try not to go wide. It is a difficult situation and we need to work hard to improve tomorrow.

9th - Danilo Petrucci
1?49.065

I am quite happy because we are very close to the others and I went back to the position where I want to be, and I should be. I like this track and the bike is not bad. However, we suffer the consumption of the rear tire and we have to work on this for tomorrow. There is still some gap and that is why I am satisfied. I have to pay attention because I can not bring my rear tire at the ideal temperature.

VI?ALES & SUZUKI ECSTAR 6TH IN ARAGON PRACTICE

Team SUZUKI ECSTAR?s Maverick Vi?ales put in consistent laps in practice for this weekend?s Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n MotoGP? at Motorland Aragon in Spain to secure sixth position as team mate Aleix Espargar? recovered from a slip-off to post 11th.

Both Vi?ales and Espargar? improved their lap-times aboard their GSX-RRs from the morning?s opening FP1 session, Vi?ales? FP2 time of 1?48.886 is less-than half-a-second from Pole, while Espargar??s time of 1?49.243 is 0.748 off the leader.

The day has been one of development for the riders and both crews busy in finding a good set-up for the bikes according to the variety of track situations. While the efficiency of the chassis is making the GSX-RRs very stable on fast corners, the handling in tighter corners and fast direction changes has still to be improved upon; the final issue only affecting Vi?ales, while Espargar? has been focusing more in finding better efficiency. The older Spaniard also incurred a crash, fortunately without injury, but the incident cost him valuable time in FP2.

Davide Brivio ? Team Manager:

?Today we tested many things, both in the set-up and with the tyres. Michelin delivered many solutions and the available combinations are many, so we mainly focused on understanding the bikes reactions and collect data to work on tonight, with the objective of finalising a good set-up for tomorrow. Unfortunately, Aleix had a little crash that made the work complicated; for the moment he?s not in the top-10, which could mean direct access to Q2, but we still have tomorrow?s FP3 to improve. Maverick also tried many things and I believe that tonight the crews will exploit the information gathered to improve for tomorrow.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?At the end my evaluation of the day is positive, I couldn?t find a really clean lap for a time attack as also in my best attempt I made some little mistakes that prevented me classifying in a better position, so considering this, being four-tenths slower is a good position and means I had the potential to be closer to the top. Here we are very effective in fast sectors, but we still struggle with the handling; our GSX-RR is very stable, it?s one of its strong points, but it becomes hard to turn in fast changes of direction. We will focus mainly on this aspect for tomorrow, we have still many options for the set-up we can explore and with the information we got today we will try to find a better handling.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?I?m not yet where I?d like to be but we did a positive job today. Unfortunately, in FP2 I had a crash; after turn one when it came to change direction for turn two I made a mistake in changing my weight on the bike, the front was too light and so I lost the grip, resulting in a slide. It was my mistake, it resulted in nothing serious for me but it affected the session, because I had to get back to take the second bike but had a slightly different configuration and I couldn?t feel confident at all. The handling is very important on this track, but the work we?ve done today gave us a lot of feedback that we can exploit for tomorrow?s configuration.?

Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Find Form in Arag?n

Action got underway at the Motorland Arag?n circuit today with the first two free practice sessions ahead of Sunday's Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n. Movistar Yamaha MotoGP's Valentino Rossi was quick to find a competitive pace and powered to a solid fourth place after FP2. Teammate Jorge Lorenzo struggled to find the right set-up in the afternoon to solve vibrations, but persevered. He caught up at the end of the afternoon session, securing seventh place in the combined rankings.

Rossi was quick to position himself as a key protagonist in the morning session. Whilst getting a feel for the track he set the provisional fastest time on his second flying lap, before putting his attention towards finding a perfect balance for his bike. As the session progressed he improved, found a solid rhythm and ended the morning practice with a best time of 1'49.016s for second place, 0.186s from first.

The Doctor stuck to the same approach in the FP2 session, using the early stages to set a fast time for provisional first place before further improving his bike's set-up. In the final three minutes the Italian rider bettered his morning time by nearly half a second with a 1'48.669s lap and ended the first day of practice in fourth position in the overall standings, just 0.240s from the front.

Lorenzo had a good start to his home Grand Prix. Eager to win the Arag?n Grand Prix for the third year in succession, he progressively built up his pace in the morning practice. Though he focused mainly on bettering his bike's set-up, he dropped into the mid-1'49s towards the end of the session and went on to conclude the morning in fifth position with a 1'49.573s, 0.743s from first.

The Mallorcan again displayed his determination in the afternoon. When faced with vibration problems, he spent the majority of the second session trying various tyre options in preparation for Sunday's race. His hard work paid off at the end of the session when he dropped under the 1'49 mark, setting a fastest time of 1'48.914s for seventh place in today's combined times, 0.485s from first.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"It's been quite a mixed but overall rewarding start to the Arag?n Grand Prix. On Vale's side everything went very smooth and they were able to work well on almost all the stints. He has been quite consistent with his pace during both practices while he still kept a margin for the end when he signed off the day with a 1'48.6s lap. Unfortunately, Jorge suffered a bit more in the afternoon, especially with the front feeling with the medium tyres and only at the end of the session he was able to set a decent lap with a front tyre that had already done 25 laps. Taking this into consideration, he has performed well. Tomorrow we have to focus on our main task to extend the rear tyre life, something we definitely need to improve. In the meantime, we have to better the reactivity of the bike in the change of direction, because for the moment the handling is still too heavy."
Valentino Rossi
"In both practice sessions, in the morning and the afternoon, I was always quite strong but we have a lot of work to do, because we are good with the new tyres, the hard and the soft, after some laps. We are concentrating on this point of view, because it will be interesting for Sunday. From this first day we take some data and are quite happy. The first impression is this: with the new tyres we are very good, but after some laps our main rival suffers less with less stress on the tyres. This is quite worrisome for us and we have to get closer."
Jorge Lorenzo
"In the morning it wasn't bad, I probably had the second fastest pace, but in the afternoon we struggled and we tried various tyres. The front medium tyres gave a lot of vibrations in the corners and the other option, the softer one from the morning that had a lot of laps, gave me a good confidence in the last free practice. All in all it wasn't a good day. Tomorrow we want to try a new setting and improve the electronics and let's see if we can be much faster."

Strong Espargaro finishes in the top five on day one at Aragon

Monster Yamaha Tech3 team riders Pol Espargaro positively kicked off his campaign at the Motorland Aragon circuit by storming to 5th place overall aboard the YZR-M1. The young Spaniard began by completing the shakedown in 9th with his personal best being only 0.165 back from reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo. The encouraging start left him confident of continuing his progress in the afternoon and there, he carried on adjusting the setup of his Yamaha MotoGP bike for Sunday. He pushed on but unfortunately fell at the notorious second corner half way through the session. However, he raced back to the pits and bravely remounted before posting his fastest lap on his 12th that saw him end up only 0.320 from the top of the field. The notable opening sees the 25-year-old primed for a successful day tomorrow where he will intend to extend his highly positive MotoGP qualifying record at the Aragon circuit.

Meanwhile, Alex Lowes got straight to work as he took the first steps in preparing for Sunday's race whilst he also readjusted back to the Yamaha YZR-M1, after having competed in the World Superbike race in Germany last weekend. The young Briton launched into action in FP1 and after building his speed, he set his personal best on his final lap, which left him in 17th. Next, Lowes continued his efforts in the afternoon as he aimed to carry on learning but whilst he was improving his time, his progress was halted. This was due to him unfortunately falling at the second turn in the final moments of the session, similarly to several far more experienced riders including his teammate. Despite the unlucky fall, he is fully confident of advancing tomorrow as he remains keen to impress in the all-important qualifying day.

Pol Espargaro
"Today has been a strong start to the weekend and I believe that finishing inside the top 5 is a truly positive result for us. The Hondas are running really well here and you can see that by looking at the time sheets, so to be as close as we are is certainly a promising way to kick off proceedings. Yet, in the middle of the FP2 session, I made a slight mistake and crashed in the second corner while I was changing direction, which was a pity. I didn't expect this to happen and I think we have to work a bit more on the setting of the bike in order to increase the front grip so that we avoid this kind of issue for the rest of the weekend. However, I was able to cut my lap time towards the end of the practice even though I was not pushing at the maximum level. Having said that, we need to improve tomorrow and make a step up as our main target is to fight with Cal for the best independent rider position in Sunday's race."
Alex Lowes
"Initially I would like to begin by saying that it feels good to be back on the YZR-M1 even if it took me a few laps to feel confident this morning. However, I think we did an ok job in FP1 as I completed almost the entire race distance on the front tyre and I was still able to lower my times at the end of the session. However, this afternoon we couldn't make as much progress as I would have liked to, but we clearly know which areas I need to advance in, so we will have an in-depth look at our data in order to make a solid plan for tomorrow. I definitely feel that we have a margin of improvement to make regarding the corner speed, and especially in long turns, plus I am also struggling a bit with a lack of rear grip. Yet, I'm sure we'll be stronger in FP3 and I'm already looking forward to getting back on the Yamaha."

Double Top 10 finish for Petrux and Scott on a Saturday full of emotions
at the Aragon Motorland

This is a Saturday that the Octo Pramac Yakhnich team will remember for a long time, both for the terrifying crash of Petrux and for the the positive qualifications, that led to a double Top 10. This is a result that has been missing for a few GP. During the FP3 the emotions have been incredibly intense. Scott has been one of the leading figures of the morning. The British rider made a brilliant performance and set a lap-time that enabled him to end up 6th in the FP3. The last run gave him the opportunity to qualify directly for the Q2. He was able to improve significantly his performance compared to the one of the free practices on Friday. Instead, Petrux was not able to fight for the direct qualifications of the Q2. When Danilo was getting out of the pit lane, he was hit by Pol Espargaro's bike, who had lost the front during turn-2. The impact has been very impressive and he hit the head after a long fall. At the beginning, the rider of the Fiamme Oro seemed to be ok. Notwithstanding, he felt a sharp pain when he came back to the garage. Immediately after the session, he was lead to the Mobile Clinic for some checks. But, fortunately, they ruled out complications. The masterpiece of Danilo happened during the Q1, when he dominated the scene registering the best time in both the runs. Both riders have been great in the Q2, where Petrux was able to gain the 9th position and Scott the 10th. They registered almost the same time (only six thousandths of margin) and they ended up only two tenths from the second row.

10th - Scott Redding
1?48.242

Today things went much better than yesterday. Maybe we expected something more from qualifying but I am satisfied. The team did a great job on the set up and the feeling has improved a lot. Tomorrow will be a long race. It will be important to choose the right tire and it will be a difficult decision. Maybe we will need to bet and hope to have made the right choice. We are improving and we are confident.

9th - Danilo Petrucci
1?48.236

I am fine even if I feel a little tired. I was a bit worried because the crash was fearful and I got scared when I had some amnesia. In the afternoon I tried to work spet by step, making sure everything was alright and I did a good qualifying. It has been a heavy day: now I hope to recover, rest a bit and wake up tomorrow without particolar pains.

VI?ALES & SUZUKI ECSTAR FRONT ROW AT ARAGON

Team SUZUKI ECSTAR?s Maverick Vi?ales put together a sensational lap in the closing seconds of Q2 at the Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n MotoGP? in Spain to take second position, as team-mate Aleix Espargar? finished eighth.

Vi?ales and Espargar??s crews worked on revised settings on the GSX-RRs from data acquired yesterday at the Motorland Aragon circuit and were immediately on a better pace in this morning?s FP3, both riders qualifying directly to Q2. Vi?ales was third with a time of 1?48.052 and Espargar? fifth with a best-lap of 1?48.308 (0.242 and 0.498 respectively from Pole Position).

In the all-important 15-minute final Qualifying 2, Vi?ales waited until 30 seconds from the end of the session to set a blistering 1?47.748-second lap; by far his fastest of the weekend. Espargar?, who will line-up in the middle of Row 3 tomorrow, also improved his lap-time, setting a 1?48.230.

Davide Brivio ? Team Manager:

?Today Maverick did a very good job ending up in second place and the first row for tomorrow?s race. This is very important and came thanks to an excellent performance. Also, Aleix could have been in a better position, but he couldn?t exploit the qualifying at its best and so this resulted in a third row position, but his pace is good and his performance has improved. For tomorrow?s race, Maverick will try to stay with the leaders while Aleix will have to recover. In FP4 they both did a really good job with many improvements and the pace is consistent and positive. As a team, we will try to find some further improvements in the set-up and exploit the potential for a good race.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?Today we did a really good job, we improved since yesterday and also found an effective time attack that resulted in the second position. This morning, my team delivered me an improved machine that allowed me to enter the Q2 and then in the afternoon we really hit the good lap. We also worked on the pace in FP4 and I feel consistent and efficient, although I still feel we can find something to further improve. We will work on this, as tomorrow, the race will be very hard, so it?s important to try all we can to make a good race. Tyres will also be important; they will drop their performance a lot in the race so it will be important to be careful to preserve them.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?I?m really disappointed with the result in qualifying, as this morning we made important improvements from yesterday and I felt really confident, but finally in Q2 I couldn?t find the perfect lap. I made many mistakes in the time-attacks, didn?t feel completely confident with the rear tyre; and couldn?t find the most effective riding to attack. It?s a pity because after this morning I felt a lot better in my performance and potential, but the good thing is that we worked hard on the pace in FP4 and that side leaves me confident.?

GRAN PREMIO MOVISTAR DE ARAG?N Q2 RESULTS:

1 Marc MARQUEZ - Repsol Honda Team - 1'47.117
2 Maverick VI?ALES - Team SUZUKI ECSTAR - 1'47.748 + 0.631

A bitter Motorland for Octo Pramac Yakhnich. A clash on the first lap
ruined the race for Petrux and Scott.

After a satisfying Saturday, that ended up with the double Top 10 earned in qualifying, the Sunday at Aragon does not give joy to the Octo Yakhnich Pramac team.
The start was good and Scott was able to overcome Petrux. At the first corner, the riders were ninth and tenth respectively, but a contact between the two forced the British rider to go wide and lose the front on the curb. Back on track after the crash, Scott finished the race without being able to fight for any points. After the clash, Danilo continued the race also if he had to deal with some technical problems that forced him to lap without a good pace. On lap 9, the Race Direction, after reviewing the contact, fined Petrux a "ride-through" penalty.
At that point, even his race was compromised. Petrux and Scott have finished respectively 17th and 19th.

19th - Scott Redding

"I am very sorry for what happened. I do not think it is a beautiful thing when it happens between teammates. I started quite well then that contact made me go wide and I could not avoid the crash. I continued until the end, but it was really frustrating because in the last 3 races I have not had the chance to fight with the others to gain experience with this bike in dry condition."

17th - Danilo Petrucci

"I am very sorry for what happened with Scott. Since the first corner, I experienced problems with the bike, I could not brake properly, I was always going wide. Unfortunately, I touched Scott. I felt it was not a very heavy touch, but it was heavy enough to push him off the track. I am really mortified. He is very angry and will apologize. The remaining of the race was really hard."

VI?ALES & ESPARGAR? STRONG AT ARAGON GP

Maverick Vi?ales and Aleix Espargar? put in strong performances on their Team SUZUKI ECSTAR GSX-RRs at today?s Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n MotoGP? in Spain after having led the race for several laps.

Vi?ales ? choosing a hard/ hard Michelin tyre combination - took the lead on the opening of 23 laps at Motorland Aragon from his second position on the grid, and, apart from losing his lead a few times momentarily, controlled the race until almost half race-distance before running wide, but fought back to bring home a solid fourth-place and just off the podium.

Espargar? ? using a medium front/ hard rear tyre choice ? was also very much in the mix with the leading pack and at one stage moved to fifth position, eventually scoring seventh.

Ken Kawauchi ? Technical Manager:

?My feeling after this race is half good and half bad; positive things are that Maverick fought for the podium and Aleix did a great race fighting for good position and ending the race without crashes. There is also a little disappointment if we consider our expectations: The weekend was positive with both riders consistently fast and this morning?s pace gave us hopes for a podium and a better placement. Anyway, both riders finished the race, not so bad positions, and also we proved that our work is progressing better and better this season. We will continue to chase our second victory and some more podiums. The next race will be in Japan, many people from the Suzuki Factory are coming to see us and many supporters will crowd the stands; it?s ?gonna be an emotional one considering that recently we have been consistently fighting within the top teams and riders.?

Maverick Vi?ales:

?Another positive race for me, although I?m never fully satisfied when I?m off the podium, but we must say that we gave 100% today. When the grip was supporting me I could do a really good pace, and in fact I took the lead in the race. I felt really confident and the lap-times came quickly and easily. Then suddenly the rear tyre lost performance due to the consumption and that is when I had to give-it-up a little. I couldn?t feel confident with hard-braking and also in acceleration, and trying to force the pace I made some mistakes that warned me to be more conservative in my riding. It was important to not have a crash and to finish the race; fourth is a lot better than a ?NC.? We knew I could have problems towards the end of the race with a worn tyre, we tried to put in some countermeasures with the electronics, but we still need to better-develop this set-up. We are continually learning and my crew did a really good job, we are getting better and better and the results in last races are evidence on this.?

Aleix Espargar?:

?I had bigger expectations for the race, especially to be more competitive at the beginning because the progress we made in this morning?s Warm-Up gave me bigger hopes. The start was positive but then I struggled a lot to overtake for the fifth position in the second part of the race, which was the one needed to keep in contact with the head of the race. When I succeeded it was too late to catch up. Anyway my feeling was a little better than last races but I still struggle to find a good feeling with the front. I?m not able to interpret the front tyre and exploit its potential. We made a lot of attempts and changes but I can?t adapt my riding style and so I cannot be as fast as I would like to be. I had a really good fight until the end, but finally I made a small mistake on the last lap and I lost sixth position.?

Double Podium for Movistar Yamaha MotoGP at Motorland Arag?n

Today's Gran Premio Movistar de Arag?n proved to be the most action-filled race of the season so far, as Movistar Yamaha MotoGP rider Jorge Lorenzo fought off his rivals to secure a hard-fought second place. Teammate Valentino Rossi also used his YZR-M1 to the fullest to fend off the competition and secured the fourth double podium of the season for the Factory Yamaha team.

Lorenzo didn't let a crash in warm-up this morning hold him back in today's race. The local hero had a brilliant start from third on the grid and fought for the holeshot with Marc Marquez. Maverick Vi?ales soon joined the fight for the front, beginning a Spanish duel that had the race fans on the edge of their seats. A flurry of activity followed that saw Lorenzo finish the first lap in third position, closely followed by his teammate. A mistake by Marquez two laps later made Lorenzo storm to second place and he continued to claw his way to Vi?ales, but he had to let his teammate past.

The top three riders briefly formed a leading group as they upped their pace, dropping low 1'49s laps. However, Marquez was closing in and with 17 laps remaining he found a way past Lorenzo, but the Mallorcan wasn't fazed. He made his experience count and waited for the right moment to fight his way back to the front, which came with 14 laps to go when he didn't need a second invitation to pass Vi?ales after the compatriot had gone wide.

Lorenzo cleverly continued his race in such a way that he still had enough rubber left on his Michelins to make a final charge five laps before the end of the race to smoothly take over second place. He was consistently stalked by Rossi, but he didn't let it shake his confidence and held off the Italian's attack to take second place over the line, 2.740s from first.

Teammate Rossi had a good start from his sixth place grid position and slotted into fourth place after turn 1, determined not to let the leading group out of his sight. With 21 laps to go, Marquez dropped back to fifth, allowing Rossi to take hold of a podium finish for the first time in the race, fuelling his ambitions even further. He hunted down his teammate and bided his time to make a move with 18 laps left, to close the gap to the race leader. He was the first rider to drop into the 1'48s as he reeled in Vi?ales and went on to take the lead of the race after a block pass in turn 4 with 15 laps to go.

The Doctor's pace proved too hot for the Spaniard, who went wide in turn 1 a lap later, allowing Rossi some breathing space before Marquez made his move with 12 laps to go. Rossi wasn't willing to let his rival go and put his head down, but he was unable to stick to the home rider and with five laps to go he put his attention towards his teammate, who pushed him back one place. The Doctor followed the fellow Yamaha rider like a shadow, but was unable to get past and took the chequered flag 5.983s behind the man in first place.

Lorenzo's superb race craft delivers him 20 points. He remains in third position, now just 14 points behind his teammate in second. Rossi's third place gives him a total of 196 points, now 52 points behind the championship leader.

The Movistar Yamaha MotoGP will next head to Japan in three weeks' time for the Grand Prix of Japan, the first of the three overseas races.

Massimo Meregalli - Movistar Yamaha MotoGP Team Director
"We knew that it was going to be difficult to beat Marquez today, but we tried as hard as possible until the rear tyre dropped, leading the race with Valentino. We have suffered from this problem since the beginning of the weekend and although we tried different settings we weren't able to fully get rid of the problem. The decision to change the tyre on the grid for Jorge paid off and as a team, we achieved a great result, finishing with two riders on the podium at our Title Sponsor's Grand Prix. When we arrived in Arag?n we had our eyes on the win and we carry this objective forward to the next round where we want to fight for the victory again."
Jorge Lorenzo
2nd / +2.740 / 23 laps, Championship: 3rd, 182 points

"Sometimes a bad situation or a bad thing brings you a good thing and that's what happened when I crashed. I got almost injured and was almost in pain, as has happened in the past, but this made me do two warming up laps, one with the hard tyre and one on the soft tyre. Finally on these two laps the hard tyre suddenly gave me a good confidence, even if I was warming up and very slow, so my instinct told me that I needed to change my race tyre to the hard one and this crash and bit of instinct for sure gave me the possibility to do this race the way I was riding it. I didn't expect to finish on the podium, I thought I would finish maybe sixth or seventh, but finally the race was again surprising. It's been a difficult weekend for me, but sometimes these kind of situations bring you to the top."
Valentino Rossi
3rd / +5.983 / 23 laps, Championship: 2nd, 196 points

"We started with a different setting and we tried to be stronger towards the end of the race, but in the final stages I was spinning a lot, but I think everyone was in the same boat anyway. It's a shame that with two laps to go I made a mistake in braking and I had to go wide. If not for that we could have fought for the second place, but anyway the podium is OK. I'm happy because it's a good podium. Here, in Arag?n, we always suffer a bit. It's a shame and I'm not fully happy, because I wanted to arrive as the first of the Yamahas and in front of Lorenzo, but unfortunately in the second half of the race he was faster than me. It's a shame, because I had some cards up my sleeve for the last laps, because I was there, but I made a mistake. I decided to go straight because else it would have been very dangerous for both of us. I lost the four points to Jorge, but it's another podium. We hope we can improve and that we can be more competitive for the overseas races."
Espargaro finishes inside the top 8 under the Spanish sun at Aragon

Monster Yamaha Tech3 team rider Pol Espargaro delivered a relentless performance in front of nearly 70,000 fans today at the Aragon Grand Prix which he completed in 8th. The young Spaniard impressively concluded the morning warm up in 3rd place, which left him highly motivated for the afternoon. Here, he kicked off his fight from the fourth row of the grid and bolted forwards when the lights went out. Espargaro was shuffled back to 12th place by the close of the first lap, yet he remained focused and set into a consistent rhythm as he targeted climbing back up through the field. The home hero progressed forward and by the 4th lap, he was running in 9th. Following this, he continued to inch closer to the rider ahead and on lap 16 he seized 8th after moving past Andrea Dovizioso. He then set his sights on closing down the San Marino race winner, Dani Pedrosa and gave his all before eventually crossing the finish line in this position. The 2013 Moto2 World Champion now confidently looks ahead to the Japanese GP where he will aim to clinch the leading satellite honours at Yamaha's home Grand Prix alongside returning teammate, Bradley Smith.

Espargaro was the sole rider for the Monster Yamaha Tech3 Team today after Alex Lowes, who was standing in for the injured Bradley Smith, was deemed unfit after being medically reviewed this morning following his crash in FP3 yesterday. In the accident, the young Briton injured his left foot and suffered swelling and contusion, which did not improve overnight and subsequently he was ruled out of the race.

Pol Espargaro
8th / + 19.432 / 23 laps, Championship: 9th / 96 points

"First of all, I have to thank the Tech3 team who did an amazing job this weekend with all the crashes that we had. The guys were always quick at repairing the bikes and today the motorcycle that I ran with felt very strong. However, I must say that I am a little bit disappointed with myself and the end result. I think we had some more bad luck yesterday and it penalised us to start from 11th on the grid. I was truly comfortable on the Yamaha today and I was confident about my chances, but unfortunately, I made a mistake at the beginning of the race and went wide at the end of the back straight and this is where I lost contact to the group in front of me. Without this slip-up, I would have probably been able to finish in front of Dani and my brother. Nevertheless, a top eight is still positive and the points that I collected are vital for my championship aspirations. Next up is the Japanese GP which is a very special race for me after my second consecutive Suzuka 8 Hours victory so I'm looking forward to seeing the Japanese fans again."
Alex Lowes
"It's a real shame that I didn't end my time in MotoGP in a positive way, but I've really enjoyed the experience and the whole Monster Yamaha Tech3 team were very welcoming to me. I have learnt a lot and even though it's a pity that this race didn't end in a positive way, Silverstone and Misano were fantastic. With regards to my injury, the top of my foot is still swollen and I've lost a lot of movement so I'm going to get everything checked as there are a couple of areas that are still sore and I have the Superbike race in France next week. The crash yesterday was big and I feel quite lucky to get away with just this injury and nothing worse. I must thank the whole team again and also wish them all the best for the rest of the season. It was definitely special to complete my first ever MotoGP race in Silverstone as it was my home GP, and I can happily look back on the past month which certainly improved my ability as a motorcycle rider and I hope I can come back to the championship in the future."
Bradley Smith
"I am really happy that I will be getting back on the Yamaha YZR-M1 in Motegi. I have to admit that it has been challenging for me to watch the last three races from the sofa on a Sunday, even though it looks like the conditions in those rounds were tough. It's good that this period is over now and I can finally return to the track. I have been working hard on my entire rehabilitation and many people have committed a lot of time and effort to give me the best chance to be ready as quickly as possible. In fact, the recovery process was due to be six months but after the efforts by myself, the doctors and everyone else, I managed to do it eight to nine weeks. For sure, it's super that I am fit enough to race again and I am excited for the last four MotoGP events of the 2016 season, including the flyaway races and in addition, I am looking forward to seeing the whole Monster Yamaha Tech3 team again."
