Bev phoned Yorkshire water this morning to tell them we’re moving next Monday, Bev turned to me & said “they want us to take a meter reading for them” I replied “tell them that’s their job, if they want a reading then they can come & take one” not in the best of moods this morning.

I urge you to take photographic evidence of the meter as you leave, four feckin years on I am still doing battle with Severn Trent Bastid Water company.
Great advice.

In my excitement, I neglected to take the gas and electric meter readings in this house when we move in. After weeks, we were hit with a gas bill of £267!

When we sold our house in Kent the week before Christmas, one of our friends called around the night before and photographed the meters, which I promptly emailed to our lawyer.

I had an electric Co do something similar, can't remember which one. I actually took a photo of the meter when I left, it was rented accommodation. 6 weeks later, while I was in Newcastle for a week working, I went to pay for a meal at a restaurant & my card was declined, twice. I had to leave my Name & address with the restaurant with a promise to pay the next day when I'd sorted things out.

Checked my bank on-line when I got back to the hotel, to find the Electric Co had cleared my account out, and my £500 overdraft. Stuck 100's of miles from home, no money and no fuel in my car, I had to borrow money from a work colleague just to get home. Took me nearly 6 weeks to sort everything out.

Apparently, the letting agent for the house i was renting submitted a meter reading 'in error' and as they were representatives of the owner, their meter reading took precedence over mine as the outgoing tenant. A timed & dated photo, together with as photo from my mothers boss (a solicitor) sorted it, I got my refund and a whopping £20 compensation payment.

The letting agent also refused me my deposit.

Don't know who owned the house or who the next tenant was, but 5 months after I moved out, I got a visit from the Tax man for unpaid income tax. That was an interesting conversation as I knew the officer, I'd trained him in about 18 months previously.

Thames Water came out and did a meter reading, I got the bill and I had gone from £40 in credit to owing £600, 7 phone calls later and a photo of my meter sent to them showing the correct reading and it seems to be sorted.

Moral of the story do your own reading

Two years ago our electric/gas company wrote to us & said they were doubling the direct debit, I asked if we were in arrears, she said “no you are £130 in credit” I asked why they were doubling our dd then she said “because we are expecting a bad winter, “tell you what, send me the £130 & cancel my dd” I believe she then had a lightbulb moment as she said it would make more sense to actually reduce our dd, I told her to leave it as it was, better to pay too much than not enough.

Ours went from around £100 in credit to £500 + debit on an estimated bill mrs slim refused to pay, after about 2 months of laughing at threats, taking the pee out of their pathetic excuses, they finally came up with "we couldn't gain access to read the meter" within 5 days of pointing out the acess to the meter is outside in just the same as all the other houses in the street & asking if they had a key we got a proper bill £130 in credit :)
