Hello all / Merry Christmas etc.

My 36,000 mile 2002 bike has had 3 trips down the road on its head, been written off and returned from the dead, and is more or less held together by not much more than dirt. However it hasn't missed a beat in 11 years and I love it more than I could love a human baby.

I used to live 900 yards from Chiswick Honda and have used them since I have owned the bike, and whilst they are good they have just quoted me about ?800 for a service / new fork seals / MOT on a bike that can barely be worth more than a grand.

So I'm wondering if anyone knows anyone in the Slough / Bucks area who can do this work properly for.....well......less money.

Cheers

Rich

There is a place called Capital Motorcyclesin Shepperton ..... He is always helpful to me when needed ...
And he uses Jack Lilley's as his MOT place ... Again they have had my custom for any a year ....
Not too far away .... Maybe worth a trip ???

Ahh.. hang on a sec.. rethink..
You say Chiswick Honda have been doing all the work on it up until now ?

In that case I would be unwilling to even guess a vague quote.. Reason ? Cos every bike I have had after a Honda main dealer has worked on it ( and there are several folk on here who KNOW I aint porking ) has required far more work than should have been needed ..

This is why I insist folk stay with their bike whilst I am working on it.. The amount of times I have pulled out black blobs that were once air filters that had 'just been changed by a main dealer' is scary..
Spark plugs that have never been changed though charged for
Oil filters over tightened
Mudguard bolts that have never been greased
Clips missing
Rad hoses left loose
No grease in the 2ndry master cylinder pivots

The list goes on and on

Sh*t, that's scary stuff.

I have, literally, no mechanical knowledge or understanding of any kind. It took my Dad 15 years to explain to me how a pedal bin works. I hope that you're not right about the guys at Chiswick Honda or that will have, conservatively, been about five grand in servicing costs down the cr?pper.

The bike's been brutally reliable over the years, so either they've done most of it right or it's just impervious to neglect / abuse. It's also (apparently) due the 'big' service where they do something with the valves. I don't know what the something is. Or, for that matter, what a valve does. My trumpet at school had them though, from what I can remember.

If I make an appointment (apparently you and I are 112 miles apart) do you do while-you-wait servicing / MOTs? And do you know what all this valve business is about?

Cheers

"Big service" "do something to the valves"????
As John will tell you .... Very very rare for valve gaps to need altering and to check them it's a minor strip down ... So of worth doing for A very long time..... Unless you have some serious miles on your bird !
The bike does survive on neglect too;-)
A honda dealer in Kingston told me my head bearings were knackered at 7k miles when I bought the bike .. Had a 2nd opinion off here and all tests seemed normal ...... Now .... With an additional 50k miles they are still still perfect ..... Never did get them replaced !!

Go see Jaws ......watch and learn .....

I'm hoping to see him myself and spend a long day learning from the master BEFORE he retires ....
