Welcome to the clan of posters mate !

Accepting that Honda speedo's are 10% out

National Speed limit is 70mph on motorways and dual-cabbageways so keep it to 80 and you should be OK

10% + 2

ACPO guidelines are 10% + 2 as you said 70 + 10% + 2 = 79, the 10% IS allowing the 10% error on the speedo.

Typical, give 'em an inch and they take a mile........ 79 and then wanting another fooking 10% !! c7u8

As FB said stick to 80 on the motorways and dual carriageways, that havent got there own 'signed' speed restriction and you'll be okay.

Keep a look out above bridges for 'ANY' stationary vehicles they could be sneaky speed enforcement devices.

It was always 60 on a dual carridgeway, 50 for a HGV.
60 on a A road and 40 for a HGV.

Motorways were the only place you were allowed to do 70. May have changed though.

My most humble, grovelling apologies, it is 70 on a DC (Internet search)

Then why did that twat in a Panda car make me slow down when I overtook him in a car???? at 65, he was doing 60.

Its OK CB
A lot of UK drivers don't know the speed limits we have been used to driving to the 'safe' speed on roads. However with the latest clampdown on speeding most drivers are furkin nervous and although they are prepared to do 35 in a 30 zone once out onto the highways and byeways they are lost. Mind you the use of repeater speed signs is somewhat lacking, I've often found myself wondering what the limit is on an unknown stretch of road.

Where I live the local authority have posted 'max 50' limits on the Conwy tunnel whereas the actual speed limit on that section is 70mph. What the council fail to appreciate is that this causes a potential accident situation. Holiday driver sees sign and hits the brakes, local driver who knows the limit is 70mph wonders what the fcuk and has to take evasive action.

Just through the tunnel is another masterpiece. There are two roundabouts, on the approach are 2 R/A signs, six countdown markers, 2 slow down now signs, a 12'x15' road sign, furkin big chevron signs on the r/a itself, the furkin big green hump in the middle of the road which is the r/a itself and the twats have to paint thick yellow lines across the road (which bounce the bike all over the place) to warn of a r/a.. leaves me furkin fummin and speachless..

As an ex Long haul HGV driver I should know that, having said that has the limit been raised in the last 10 years or so?

Mind you speed limits were bought in many years ago, when 70 for a Ford Anglia was effing fast, now a days all cars can do it easily, and stop a lot quicker thanks to disc brakes, ABS etc, so surely now is a time to review it.

just to throw a cat amongst the pigeons ...

the official legal maximum speed limit in this country is ....

50 mph.

Now before you all start leaping in wiv "bollocks no it ain?t" etc etc, back in 1973 (?) when the first of the big fuel crisis was going on, the government of the day passed a law reducing the speed limit to 50. Once the crisis was over, the original posted limits were reinstated on a temporary basis only, as a further fuel panic was predicted.

Now this second one never actually materilised, but the law reducing the speed to 50 was also never repealed, so the temporary revertion to the original posted limits remain in force to this day. It requires a second act of parliament to repeal the reduction, and this has not been done. It also means that whatever government of the day is in power at any given time, can by simply making a statement in Parliament, reduce the limits back to 50 without having to go through all the debating process again.

Which is why, if you get a speeding ticket  it sometimes says things like "82 in a TEMPORARY 60 mph limit". Don?t ask how I got to know all this shite, but there you go.
(I got this info from the department of highways whilst preparing a defence for a speeding case.)

So just think, Blair and his cronies could just simply announce, on a whim, that in order to make everywhere safer (not to mention raising god knows how much in speeding fines) that we are reverting to the 50 limit, and he doesn?t even have to debate it in Parliament.

So, anyone up for a thrash out today!!!

Huh, I used to get 85 out of my Anglia (997, not 1100) with a following wind. Mind you, on arrival at my destination I had to open the bonnet, get under the distributor cap and re-gap the points every time (and yes I did do it myself, with the aid of a business card as a feeler guage). Ahhhh, those were the days 8l1nd .

If memory serves me correctly, it was originally 70 on Dual Cabbageways and went down to 60 during the petrol crisis in the 70's, about the same time as the three-day week. Wouldn't mind that again! Can't remember when it was raised again as they don't publicise things like that, so only the new drivers get to hear of it.

I suppose this thread does highlight the need to keep a copy of the Highway code around the house to keep up to date with. :loo:

for XXlarge and Kevxx
They started putting in a new main drainage system 4 years ago, to clean up the river, and have dug up every street& road a few times each year. Promises are to be finished in Dec. in readiness for Cork starting its "European city of culture" status - you know where we are supposed to love poety, street theatre & opera. They havent a prayer in being finished - so Kevxx be prepared for a trip to the dentist. And Kevxx stay away from Guinness - ive just changed to Beamish @ c. 50 cents a pint cheaper and just as good. Expect to pay euro 2.90 in the suburbs (Blarney) and 3.30 in city centre.
