Just received the following:

Marshalling support needed for the 2007 MGP.

Here in the Isle of Man we continually need to recruit more marshals for the TT & MGP road races. It is an enormous task each year, to effectively provide enough marshals to cover the minimum manning levels at the many marshalling posts around the 37.73 mile TT course. It is essential that these minimum manning levels are met to conform to Health & Safety and risk assessment requirements; quite simply if they are not there will be no racing.

You can help if you are visiting the Isle of Man for the 2007 Manx Grand Prix, consider joining us and sign on as a marshal. If you already marshal we look forward to meeting you again in 2007; in the meantime maybe you can encourage a friend to join you. You may have marshalled before but not recently; you will be most welcome should you decide to return. If you have never marshalled before but would like to we would be pleased to give you all the information you will need.

New marshals or those who have marshalled elsewhere or not for some time, will be treated as Novice Marshals. This means they will not be left at any location on there own and they will not be asked to undertake any specific duty unless they are completely happy to do so. The Novice Marshal will carry a specific coloured warrant card to show their status and a log card to record all the marshalling sessions they attend. To lose the Novice tag all new marshals will need to gain 10 signatures on the log card or 7 signatures if they have completed a TT Incident Management Course. Each time the novice attends a race or practice session the senior or Deputy Sector Marshal will sign the card; practice sessions count as one signature and race days count as two. Before being allowed to sign on as a marshal all novices will receive and need to view a short Introduction to Marshalling DVD which explains much of what they may experience as a marshal; they will also fill in the official signing on form and an undertaking form which explains much of what may not be apparent to the novice marshal; such as how fast the machines are in a particular sector or how close you may find yourself to the action. Marshalling Matters, a pocket size booklet giving masses of information will also be provided which is essential reading for all marshals.

All marshals are encouraged and welcome to attend our Incident Management Courses as and when they are held here on the island and in the UK. They are free and take a whole day to complete; on completion the marshal will receive a cloth badge and a certificate First Aid for Motorcyclists from the St John Ambulance; both valid for three years. The IMC training gives instruction in race procedure; flag signals; use of TETRA radio; powers of a marshal and a good deal more. The other part of the training is in first aid; this covers crash helmet removal; fitting of a neck collar; resuscitation techniques; log rolling onto a stretcher and AIRMED helicopter loading procedure and again a great deal more. It is a hands-on course and a long day with a free lunch thrown in, but it is worth doing. The skill and confidence it gives you on completion is invaluable and it could help you save a persons life; it has done so many times in the past.
