I know all that.

for me visiting the chapel at St John’s in Cambridge and learning the story of how the students campaigned to have one of their former number who was German and died serving his country added to the ‘allied’ ex students who died serving their country was a real life lesson.

we will have to agree to disagree.:)
Wow. Have you any idea how arrogant that comes across?

Perhaps if you'd spent some time in uniform then you might appreciate the reticence that some have towards putting up memorials for your enemies on home territory.

I for one would be vehemently opposed to memorials honouring dead provos or Argentinians.

But you know all that, don't you..?

you have your opinion, I have mine.

it is certainly not a subject that I am going to have a row about, not least as there are too many variables. For instance introducing Argentinians and Provisiionals that are much more recent elements outside the opinion I was expressing.

Ah.... The old “shut down the conversation because it's not going my way" ploy.

Shame.... I was about to ask you to justify your reasoning for a memorial to some long dead German aircrew, who's only contribution to Britain was to bring death and destruction to this country, when it took decades before we finally got a memorial to the aircrews of Bomber Command.

we have different opinions, I don’t need to justify mine the same as you don’t need to justify yours.
I have withdrawn as it’s obviously going to turn into a ruck that won’t serve any purpose. If you see that as anything else that’s up to you.

And I do agree the lack of memorial for raf bomber crews was a disgrace, as was Winston and others distancing themselves from carpet bombing after ww2

Joe Root today became only the second England player to reach 10,000 Test Match runs.

what makes it particularly remarkable is that he is exactly to the day the same age as when the other England player reached that milestone - Alistair Cook.

When the BBC first found out that in Only Fools and Horses Del would call Rodney a "Dipstick" they didn't quite understand its meaning.

Apparently the reaction was along the lines of "Well that's quite clever as he's tall and thin"

It was thought best not to actually explain that the most common use of the phrase was something quite different.

:)

JimI Hendrix owned a house just around the corner from me. His long term girlfriend Monika Danneman lived in it and apparently he was a regular visitor. Sadly the lady in question committed suicide in that house, sort of reflecting that Hendrix died in her London flat.

Seaford, Rock and Roll capital of the world.

I saw a picture of the Queen from when she visited Exeter many, many years ago and had a pint at the Bridge Inn, coincidentally my friend Angie is in the background. When I mentioned it to my sister yesterday she told me how when she worked there she was asked out by a certain Major Hewitt who lived just close by - she turned him down saying he was a ‘poncey-plummy twit’ CFFC797E-2067-4C78-9F57-6F9671E809EA.jpg

Seaford, Rock is shite compared to Bridlington rock, and Rolls away from being any capital of the world.

Along with the relatively well known ‘upkeep’ and ‘highball’ versions of the bouncing bomb a smaller 300lb version called ‘baseball’ was developed to be fired from motor torpedo boats but never saw action.

As an aside, I will be visiting Reculver, one of the sites used for testing the original concept, in the next few days.
