After an initial surge of bookings it seems that every one else is putting off booking up until the last minute..

Which is a shame cos with only 25 bikes booked in so far I am afraid it is looking as though we may have to cancel.. sorry folks.

We need at LEAST 80 bikes and really 90 to a 100 to break even
Last year Bert and I coughed a few quidlets up cos the numbers were down, but obviously we canna keep on doing that as neither of us are exactly rolling in folding stuff..

It is a BIG cash outlay Bert and I have to make to book the site ( as it is if we cancel we will have to fork out 200 sovs between us )

If you ARE gonna book PLEASE folks.. do it now !

The Bash has been going a long time and everyone has a bloody good time there,, it would be a shame to see it end.

Echo what JAWS says

[Serious post]

In 2003 we just about broke even on the BASH and that was because he sold a lot of BIRD clothing

In 2004 we had to increase the BASH prices to break even - JAWS and I had one hell of a row because he wanted to keep the BASH ticket price at the previous levels - just as well we did increase the ticket price

In 2005 we kept the ticket prices the same as 2004 and we lost a fair amount of money between the two of us

Sorry peeps but in 2006 unless we get 90 people booking [so that we can break even] the event will be cancelled - so far we have just 25 people "hard booked and paid for" but with some promises to attend

In 2005 we had a lot of "hard promises" but people never showed, cancelled at the last minute or just didn't cough up

In 2006 with what I have on my plate [moving homes and businesses etc just 4 days after the 2006 BASH] I'm not prepared to take the financial risk.

Please understand [and again for the newbies] how the finances are set up:-

Bikers Oracle own the domain and the server that the forum sits happily on

ALL monies from sponsorship go directly to Bikers Oracle - JAWS and myself do not see one single penny of the sponsorship money

I am personally a shareholder in BikersOracle but since it's conception and initial investment, the company has yet to make an profit or pay any shareholders dividend

The only "fiscal income" that JAWS and myself receive to fund B.I.R.D through the year comes from the BASH. The BIRD clothing project did a great job to start off with but now we would have to restock and on all the sizes and colours in all the embroidered clothing styles...it would cost an initial investment of ?2000

We try and raise money for CLIC [our chosen charity] and last year [I forget the exact amount] we raised a thousand quid - all of that money goes direct to CLIC

So.............

We both rely on attendance at the BASH to "fund and support" B.I.R.D throughout the 12 months - without the BASH the entire forum and community is at risk I'm afraid

JAWS and myself DO NOT and never have seen BIRD as a money-making "opportunity"

To JAWS it's a way of marketing www.jaws-motorcycles.co.uk to a wider biking audience - lets call it advertising

To me - it's a hobby - simple as that

The link on forum and website to my business www.net-effectz.co.uk reaps minimal return for me. Contrary to one [ex] members belief, I do not make millions on webdesign from the link on the forum!!

JAWS and me have both met and made a lot of good friends through BIRD [as well as some arseholes!!]

The BASH is quite a costly event to organise - unfortunately we aren't big enough to attract "exhibitors" so we get no income from there - would you attend a 3 day event to sell 3 sets of tyres?

We actually have to PAY the Burger/Tea/Butty Van to attend the 3 days cos the takings they make are less from the BASH'ites than they would make selling buns in a laybye - we have to fund the difference or they wouldn't attend

The Club House [whilst a good venue] charge us for the use of the grounds and facilities

The security guys, the band, the banners, the signposts, the organisation and other expenses all add up

Without people attending the financial risk is relatively high

BUT neither of us are prepared to risk having to dip our hands [again] deep in our pockets

So.............sorry peeps but unless "hard bookings" are confirmed and paid for within the next two weeks, the 2006 BASH will have to be cancelled

I for one will be sorry to see the event NOT take place - for those who have attended in the past, you KNOW what a cracking weekend it is - beer, bikes, banter and bolloxx. If you haven't riiden a wanky moped across rough grass and tarmac you haven't lived - ask Lumpy!!!!

Ball rest firmly in the members court now

Over to you lot - cough up or cancel? It's your choice

good looking AND modest
not sure if this is a positive or minus
but we're going, as we have the last three years,
Tina and I always have a great time, we've met lots of "the usual" subjects, compared bikes/ideas and generally had fun, g0nn3
a big part of the weekend is to enable the wives and girlfriends to get to know one another, rather than just be there in "the background" more is planned for the Lady's, and as "El Lumpy" has pointed out, we have already lost 1200 Pete's business which has been a big blow to most of us, lets not lose this as well :dunno: if you intend coming please book it with Jaws ASAP

John & Dave, please don't take this the wrong way, but if it is off can you let us know ASP.
As I'm sure others will have done, I have booked 3 & half days off work for it & Dawn 2 & half,
now I know you two will be out of pocket, I still have a chance raking mine back
(with it being a B/hol it's double time for me) I'm also one of them nasty people whom are on strke h1d1ng2 (council) so I need to claw some dosh back brok3 .

It would be a shame if it din't go head as we have done the last 3 (in-spite of my joining date?) and we really look forward to it.
We rank it as one of the best weekends of the year (we've got a shit life :p ).

So come on you lot get your names down, you wont get a bank holiday away for that price anywhere ells.

For Gods sake and mine please dont cancel.
We have already booked and paid for ferries. Even if your numbers dont grow enough I am certain that those attending would be willing to pay a bit more.

The rest of you;
Come on - it really is a great weekend. We are coming from Ireland because of the crac we had last year.

True Thetford is not central but the journey to and from is part of the enjoyment.

John,

Andy and I are guilty of not paying up yet but we are definitely coming. The money will be paid, I`ll do it by Paypal as soon as I`ve picked "monkey" up. I`ll even promise to get Andy to leave the bugle at home this year.

We have never been able to make the bash as it clashes with a rally we do in Belgium with our club, but this year, the Belgian one has moved to the following weekend, for some unknown reason.

We've been debating anyway as doing the bash would mean 174 miles each way on the Bank holiday weekend, 234 miles each way the following weekend and then 110 miles each way the weekend after that for the Welsh Coast Rally. Artemis tells me it may be a bit too much for me at my age (cheeky cow).

She's also nagging me to go to the BASH, so as I must obey, expect our dosh shortly.

Our break even point I've calculated at 64 attendees - allowing for a mix of riders and pillions

Below this number and we HAVE to cancel

I'm not prepared to pay out of my own pocket any longer - enough is enough [particularly given the shit aimed towards me by certain factions this last 6 months]

Sorry but 64 is the critical number

Anything over that then as we've already agreed, a contribution will be made from the BASH fund to CLIC

Simple answer for a simple person

lumpy said:
John, I assume why you doggedly keep the same venue, but a more central point may entice more people. Thetford is a God forsaken hole to get to and while the whole event is cheap, it can be expensive to get there....

Quiet Simple Lumpy

We use Thetford cos JAWS lives there

Now if ANYONE is prepared to take on board the organisation in a differerent venue - then PLEASE step forward

Criteria includes ALL of the following :-

Site must be biker friendly

Site must be accessible a week before hand and for 24 hours per day over the 4 day event

Site should have a "flexible" licensing arrangement

Site should have a "flexible" attitude towards a degree of rowdiness therefore at least 1 mile away from a residential area

Site should charge no more than ?500 for the 4 day event

Additionally........

Person responsible MUST committ the following :-

Be prepared to locate, negotiate and frequently check site and site booking

Be prepared to secure services of on site catering, security [regardless of what you think of current arrangements which DO work]

Be prepared to issue and monitor security entrance numbers

Be prepared to answer countless emails asking about this that and the fecking other....where do I get B&B, where is the site, what time can I arrive, etc etc etc etc etc

Be prepared to devote 2 complete days off work [without pay] BEFORE the event making sure that everything is in place, drive miles around placing BASH road signs

Be prepared to devote 2 complete days off work [without pay] AFTER the event making sure that everything has been cleared and tidied up, signage removed from site and roadsigns

Be on call for the entire 4 days of the event to answer questions, sort people out, wipe arses et al

Be prepared to make available their own house all weekend for supply of teas, coffees and for people to kip down

Anyone up for the job cos this is what JAWS does every year, with a little help from me

So please don't moan about Thetford [again] cos no other fucker is prepared to put in the [unpaid] effort that John does

JAWS does a brilliant job - puts hours of unseen effort into the event and I for one take my hat off to him

A coastal BASH so there's something for the girlies to do when they've heard 'BIRD BIRD BIRD BIRD' all day and got fed up.

I don't mind but i can imagine some 'uvver arves' putting the mockers on BH weekend being taken up.
