... the answer is.
If you stare at a solid colour for any length of time, your eyes will try to compensate. The 'balance' colour will be the opposite one on a colour wheel.
Our eyes are also 'slow' to erase images, and that's how we have moving images at the cinema. As everyone must know, the images DON'T move, but because of the latency in our eye-mechanics, images linger.
So you look at an almost complete ring of circles, all the time the image is 'burnt' into your retina. As your eyes also try to compensate for the strong colour, the image buned is the compensated one (green in this instance). When one of the circles disappears, you 'see' the latent image on your retina.
Watch it for a minute or so, (longer is better) then look 2 inches to one side. For a while at least, you will see a full ring of green circles.
