hi peeps, bought an 05 bird coz i luv em,but this one is cooking me.It runs 97 to 102 degrees, fan is mostly on at these temps, not good i feel.checked coolant,ok,no leaks or steam, runs very well.gota scotoiler fitted, vacuam takeoff is from spigot at back of motor,n i have a stray vac pipe just sitting there, removed to make way for oiler pipe i imagine.anyone any ideas,is this temp normal?cheers:xmh1t1t

................ 102 is nothing unusual especially if you are sitting/stopped in traffic - yes we all have to do it at times. Does the temp drop when you are in relative terms bimbling around? About 86?

Suggest you do a quick search, there are lots of 'running hot' threads, that might put your mind at rest!

................ and as I'm in Bristol every day if you see a red blurr give me a wave :-0)

It should certainly drop below 96, my modified Bird still gets down to the mid 80s at a steady 50-80. Have seen 126 though on a coolish day but I won't say what I was doing h1d1ng2
I presume that you have checked the front surface of the rad, they can really gather the crud. If that is clear and you are still above 90 I would suspect a small air lock.

Fan kicks in at 100 and it's very often on in town/traffic.

I generally don't reckon on it being "warmed up" after starting until it reaches about 60 ish.

On coolish days at gentle pace I think (bit fuzzy 'cos I've not really taken much note of it lately) it settles at around 76 or so .. but quickly goes up to over 100 if stopped in traffic.

When I first got the bike I used to worry a lot about the temp.....

now I don't ... if it gets into the "far too hot .. guage screaming red flashing" zone I'll panic.... otherwise not ....

:dunno:

Its funny you mention that, I was in the queue to Knockhill a couple of weeks or so ago and although the weather was pretty hot (yes I know!) the bike actually overheated and I had to push it until it cooled ! (Steam was pishing out of the overflow!)
Gonna have to get the fan checked out to see if is working cos I did notice it was quiet and usually I can hear it kick in.

Was in the Pyrenees this June and it was hot. Bothered me that the Bird was getting hot and the fan coming on a lot but from what I've since heard, Bird's do run hot, more so the FIs like my 05. Also in the Pyrenees where we were the roads were narrow and winding so I was doing a lot of changing up and down without getting a constant breeze through the radiator. This IXXRA article is useful.

On a normal day at a steady 70 mph she'll probably be reading below 85, 79 - 82 on a cool day. In town the fan will be coming in a lot at around 101-102 but as soon as I move off the temperature drops back. I've never seen it go above 104/105.

Mind you, got some coolant in and will be changing it soon before I shoot off to Scotland. Should be cold enough there though.

It amazes me that your bikes can overheat in a country where anything over 25c is considered a heatwave :violin: :-0)
I have ridden my 98 Bird for the last 3 years, same coolant (until a month ago) in 45c temps and the analogue gauge has never been over 3/4

Yes but in Perth the traffic isn't normally bad enough that you have to stop & start that much!

Ha Ha when was the last time you were in Perth :-0)
Some places like our "freeway" can be lucky to do over 25kmh in peak hour c7u8
Not to mention the CBD etc due to our fucked up arrangement of traffic lights, one way streets, merging lanes etc :)-(

Oh welcome BTW w;;v

I was driving from Armadale to Perth twice a week for a while and it was a nightmare, but that was in a cage :-0)

I've got a '99 with an old skool guage and before the recent full service with cam chain change it was on 1/3 pretty much all the time at all speeds apart from in heavy London traffic where it would get to half way, the fan would kick in and after a minute or two we were back to normal.

Now, post service, the guage is halfway to 3/4 pretty much all the time and my boots and balls are getting a noticeable toasting! What does the collective wisdom reckon?

I've taken it back to the mechanic, first time I've used him but he seems fair enough, who has broken it down again and assures me the cooling system is all running fine.

Air lock somewhere?

Hmmmm.... answers on a postcard please.

you need a
fan coil cleaner

we use the stuff on a/c units and it clears everything!

heres a link to give you a idea, look up air con services in ya yellow pages

Sorry to hi-jack this particular thread but Markiemarc appears to have his solution, however, two minutes crawling around in a dark cramped garage confirms that my rad is beautifully free from crud...

Still I've got a 400 mile round trip on Monday for work... kill or cure!

!

My Bird goes the same in heavy slow traffic in London

But once moving soon settles down, If it don't after a minute or so then you got a problem
