Ok, the cost of pretty much everything is going through the roof. Email this morning from our buildings/contents insurers and our annual policy is going up by almost 25%!

How odd, I was just thinking about insurance this morning.

Since the rules changed preventing insurers from offering better deals to new customers it seems they're laughing all the way to the bank.

Having renewed two vehicles plus home insurance I found nothing available cheaper than the renewal quote.

Strangely enough each renewal quote was so close to a 25% increase it was spooky.

I can't see how the comparison sites are going to survive now.

If the renewal is always the cheapest option but is a hefty price hike why/how can anyone use them other when taking out a new policy?

Maybe it's time for a new conspiracy theory.

It was always the insurers manipulating the consumer champions and government to get the new rules.

;)

I bet I don't. Mine's bad enough now and it's going up 5%. You'd be surprised how expensive mine is considering I live in a Communist third world country.

I’m not sure if it is countrywide - down here they have hammered anyone who has an empty ‘second property’ that is vacant/uninhabited. I sort of get it as a Brighton has a massive stock of second/holiday homes but it seems, as ever, that everyone else is being clobbered as a result of one specific problem. Only last night on the local news there were people whining that they couldn’t afford to live in Brighton - much as I would like to I can’t afford to live in Belgravia, get over it.

The irony is that loading landlords up with this stuff is only going to see rent increases and that doesn't help the housing problem.

Home insurance quote went up nearly 40 % so I walked elsewhere and found an identical policy with another insurer for a few quid more than I had paid the year previous. Council tax up 4.7% overall, last year it was up 4.9%!

Just renewed my house insurance. Existing insurers put cost up by nearly 80%. Shopped around & found a like for like policy for approx 10% over what I paid last year. Car insurance up by 40%, bike insurance less than 5%, council tax 4.8%.

And now I'm having to commute 2 days a week (work part time), diesel has just gone up to 159.9p a litre.

On the plus side, because National Insurance is going down to 8%, I'm £6 a month better off

When we moved back home, it took nine months to sell our place in Kent and the local council charged us full council tax on the empty property. Yet when I lived in Asia, Mrs P was given a 25% discount for single occupancy.
