Going touring in June and I need a good lid - any recommendations?

welcome to the bird site

 but I think your going to have to work the answer to your question out yourself, everyone on this site has their own ''favorites'' but amongst the names banded about are shuberth!, arai, and ogk, it all depends on the shape of your head etc, sorry I could'nt be of more help on your first post, I'm sure someone else will have a more definative view,

welcome mrweegie.................

to BIRD.

Ianrobbo is spot on. Noone can really recommend a lid to you as everyone has different shape heads.

You will just have to go to a good shop and try a load on. See which fits your head the best. Look at the specs on the lid. Maybe you want a lighter model. A Flip up, or you want something with a good colour scheme.

It really is a choice you have to make personally. The only thing I would say is when you have located a lid that you feel is right. Make sure that the staff at the shop fit you properly, that you get good advice. The lid should have an all over tightness, but not uncomfortably so. You should not for instance be able to just slip it off your head. Remember the lining will give after time so you don't want to buy a loose one. Arais do have interchangeable linings so you can get for instance thicker cheek pads.

Make sure you take along your neck warmer if you wear one, and if you slip it over your head a little too. Take your earplugs if you wear them aswell as some helmets can squash them more into your ears making them unbearable.

When you locate the helmet don't buy straight away. Make a note of the model and size and have alook on the internet. often you can get a huge discount buying mailorder. Providing you ensure that the helmet you tried on is the exact size you need. Can't return it after all.

Hope this helps. There will be loads more advice on the way!!!!!

Arai qunatum f you can also just pop an autocom headseat into the cheekpads and not know they are their. they say you either have an arai head or a shoei..

Hi, MrWee........

DO NOT be tempted to buy mail order. You really do need to try on before purchase as even lids marked as the same size vary in fit. Even different models from the same manufacturer vary.

I've a Shoei head and I think it's going to be between the Raid or XR1000 - both very nice on and good price too.

Thanks again for the advice.

If you don't need the helmet until June, have you thought about waiting 'till the BMF show in May? Reasonable discounts to start with and probably 30 - 40 dealers within 50yds radius, all trying to sell the same helmet so room for haggling.

Shuberth S1 is the answer to your query: comfy, the most quiet I know of, no uplift effect at hight speed due to neck skirt, no fog, inside flipable dark visor so your don't have to carry a dark visor and clear, you just flip it down when sunny and, well you get the picture, great at speeds you know you really shouldn't reach, there's even enough room in front of the mouth for a mic if you've got autocom, stay dry even after 700kms in continuous heavy shower... well I just did 1850 miles in the most ugly weather conditions you can imagine and I can't fault it!

Can you remove the cheek pads eg to fit an Autocom headset??

Many Thanks

Never tried Richard, it's not obvious that you can, having said that there is plenty of room for the ears so you might be able to fit autocoms in it easy - I think the best person to ask would be aidey (he works for the distributor in UK) - sorry I couldn't be of more help!

I know...

Bob Pinders got one. v-nice it is too!

He told me it took him hours to get the autocom in but it was worth it.

Ask him

touring lids...

I use a Lazer JetMask Flip up.

Light
Cool (temperature)
Coolish (looks)
reasonably quiet
Double glazed so misting just does not happen. ever.
drop down internal dark visor for that one bright day.
Comfortable (relative I know)
and waterproof to date.
Black (well mine is anyway)

couldn't ask for a better touring type lid IMHO.

Try on loads and keep 'em on for as long as poss in the shop. I think shops should have a wind tunnel thingy, pop on helmet.... stick head in wind tunnel.... select speed....stand there and see what its like doing the speed you will be doing in it. Helmets react differently when on the move to standing in a quiet warm shop with no draughts.:neenaw:

too right Jono, hence the importance of product reviews by fellow riders - re. the Schuberth as I already said, aerodynamism is great, plus no lift effect so no strangulation even at 'go straight to jail' speeds!
