It seems that in 5 years only 5% of vehicles on the road will be diesels... Great news for the diesel hating brigade.

However as 95% of vehicles will be petrol cars CO2 emissions will be up global warming will accelerate and we will all fry..... Great news for the diesel hating brigade as if everyone is dead there will be no diesel vehicles on the road.

And selling well still too
Not according to the bmw main dealer I spoke to - he said the arse had totally fallen out of diesel sales in the context of overall reduced sales.

Simple solution............ ride a bike :D

Not a diesel one though as the current ones are either utterly crap or stupidly expensive

The Blackbird is believed to have been 'retired' by Honda as it could not be adapted for a second time to meet tightening emissions requirements.

So are emissions requirements the same for cars & bikes ?

That may be a daft question I know but I have never thought about it before

noobie

Clueless in most things
BMW who the German government told to go whinging to the U.K. government and threaten to leave unless we kowtow to the eu, bmw?

To many diesels at the moment to get off the road in 5 years but agree dealers on new diesels have seen a big drop. Some have tried to blame brexit (smmt), which is nonsense but more likely to dieselgate and the lying german manufacturers, as well as the move away from diesels which is seeing a drop of new diesels as people are worried they might get stuck with a car from new, that would have the depreciation of a Dacia. I think diesels will still be around for a while

Bmw who are threatening to pull out of Britain because we won't buy their overrated, over priced shite boxes?
I'll be hanging on to my fabulously awesome overrated, over priced shite box.

Thank you.

First of all, it's 12 years and not five. The ubiquitous, all knowing 'they' (bunch of twats that they are) reckon we'll be down to 5% by 2030.

Secondly, buy an EU Cat 6 diesel and it'll be cleaner than any of these gay petrols.

A lot can happen in 12 years. By then, anyone with a quarter of one brain cell will have realised that electric cars don't work in the real world for people that drive more than five miles a day. Furthermore, someone will (hopefully) have woken up to the fact that electric cars actually cause more damage to the environment through the production and subsequent disposal of their batteries than any diesel (or petrol) ever could.

Personally, I'm absolutely delirious with the purchase of my overrated, over-priced, crushed Panzer, diesel shite box even though I haven't technically taken delivery of it yet.

So what is your long term plan for replacing fossil fuels, which is surely a must as we continue to use a finite source of energy while slowly strangling the planet?

Electric cars may or may not be the way ahead, but surely technology must be allowed to develop to find out if the challenges can be overcome? They are a damn sight better now then they were even five years ago, and a million times better than those from twenty years ago.mmwhere might they be in another five years.

Solar energy is pretty hopeless in terms of providing transport today, but with development who knows? Wind power isn't on the agenda today, but maybe it will have to be at some point'

The thought of bunging kitchen waste into a car as per Back to The Future is laughable today, but who knows in the future? Some of the stuff in Star Trek when it first came out was totally whacky but common place today.

Change is an absolute necessity. One day there will not be a need for cars (or any other form of vehicle) as technology for alternative travel means develops. I have no idea what there will be, but I know it will happen one day.

AB, Your comment about "Bunging kitchen waste into a car" is not as laughable as you may think! I design gas assets for a living and a lot of what I do is for Biomethane plants. Putting waste into an anaerobic digester to produce gas, then cleaning it up and exporting it to the gas network for you to use at home for cooking. We already have LPG infrastructure for fueling cars so it's not a stretch for this Biogas to be used.

The future is now!! (so they say)

The idea of us all driving electric cars is not workable, we don't have enough power stations, also the batteries have a fineite life and we will end up with mountains of defunct batteries that we can't do anything with. Running cars on hydrogen at the moment isn't feasible as it is too exspexpen to produce but would provide a clean fuel.

I read it somewhere once that there are engines that can run on water but those greedy twats at the oil majors keep buying all the patents so that they can continue holding the world to ransom with fossil fuels. True? I dunno but it would not surprise me in the least.

Hydrogen is the best option (in my opinion) but at the moment it's relatively expensive to produce (But this cost would reduce with large scale production) The main drawback is energy required, it takes a lot of electricity to produce so the car would be clean but the power stations would be chugging out even more (Electric cars anyone??).
What we need to do is throw much more time and effort at nuclear fusion to get it right as this has the best potential for supplying the ever growing power needs of modern society. With 'free' electrical energy hydrogen would then be the perfect fuel to replace oil and gas in almost every way without anything like the amount of pollution.
