Gas Help

Have just bought a place that's a repossession.....it's been empty for about 3 months...... went in there today to put the electricity back on, refill the central heating system etc

All seemed OK until I tried to turn the mains gas supply back on - it's one of these levers contained in a plastic box at the front of the property with a regulator and meter on it.............. any ideas why I can't move the lever parallel to the pipe? It's as if it's been wired up? Been trying to call the supplier but been in a queue for ages...............

Do I need a Corgi geezer, or should I be able to just turn the lever myself?

Any ideas anyone?

NOT SURE

But it might just be stuck, but obviously you must be a bit carefull, if nothing obvious then give it a bit more grunt. Can you see direction arrow?
I know not the same but when we moved the water tap was a right git to move and that had only been of 3 months.
Hope you get sorted, have a good one.

There's only one way it could possibly move from the position it's currently in, and I've really given it some stick.....

.......have just found out that Transco went to the property at the end of October and replaced the meter (they changed all of them in the area) - perhaps because it was obvious that the property was empty they've secured it in the off position?

I'm awaiting a call back............cheers

You Should

Realy get a corgi Reg installer or the supplier to turn it on s it may need the system purging after 3 months c7u8

Report it

Use some reverse logic on them big companies.

Phones Transco 0800 111 999, and tell them you can smell gas, they will be round in a jiffy, and sort it for nowt.

When we had a big fire last year, Transo attended and put a disc in the meter somewhere. It meant we couldn't turn it on and we were given a notice that it was illegal until everything was replaced and the whole system was inspected by a CORGI guy.

Sounds similar.

Is the lever on a little square drive Sam?

If so, is it poss the lever has been taken off and put back on at 45 degrees to maybe stop kids or whatever from turning the gas back on.

What I'm trying to say is perhaps the gas was turned off, then the lever moved on the spindle so that when you try to turn it on it appears to be jammed (cos the spindle is already on the stop?).

Hope that makes sense!

LOL !! Now you see this is where you tell those that know and those that dont :p

If the suspected leak is in an enclosed place use a weak fairy liquid and water solution and look for bubbles..

If its outside use a match ( and I aint joking ! )

Ok, that tap.. It has gummed shut.. Use a normal sized claw hammer and give the handle a few sharp taps upwards... it should start to move.. keep taping until it is in line with the pipe at which point it is completely on.

Once it is on do as G W said and turn on a few taps to get the gas through the pipes and get shot of any air.
Open all the windows and doors and give it a couple of minutes.. then do the pilot lighting dance ( this usually involves certain contortions and holding buttons while trying to press other buttons with your knee, all the while trying to fold your self in half to look in a glass window that is JUST out of line with the bloody pilot nozzle !

Do take a reading no matter what anyone else has said and do take a foto of the meter showing the reading and the newspaper of the day..
Might seem ott but if there IS any argy bargy you know you are good to go..

They refused to replace mine unless I was at the property, but they do insist on coming into the house to re-light the gas boiler. Presumably if no one was in, they didn't want to turn it back on in case you had some mad appliance with a pilot light and no safety cut-off.
