Just been flicking through the crap on the box, when all of a sudden heard what I thought was an advert for a certain beer, Dilly Dilly ETC, and how wrong was I, it turns out I heard "Billy Billy" and it was an advert for muckdonalds, talk about copyright infringement!! anyone else noticed companies jumping on the backs of other companies adverts.

Can't say I have.

But I do like the current lloyds Bank advert encouraging parents to talk about money stuff to their offspring. So many times I came across situations where a lot of Inheritance Tax would have been avoided, not to mention the younger generation benefitting when they could have done with it rather than having to wait for parents to pass.

Tell me about it, my mother's house was split between my brother and I, unfortunately, we can't flog the bugger, as there is so much that needs updating, Kitchen/bathroom/electrics/windows, ETC, we simply don't have the cash or time to do them, and our kid says the same as me, we wont give the place away, as we know what'll happen, some twat with the dosh to do what's necessary and make a killing, neither of us object to someone making a bit of profit, but what we would get for it is peanuts, and we ain't giving the place away. !!

Borrow some money against it, do the work and sell it for top dollar? In my experience it usually isn't worth the hassle though as the profit after paying the tradesmen is minimal. You need to do the sums.

A profit can be made when buying a house that needs work doing, once the work is done. I’m no expert but if the house is re-fitted with no emotional attachment i.e. magnolia paint, B&Q standard fittings, etc., manage the project yourself, do as much work yourself as possible or wth the help of trusted mates then tidy money is possible.

Things go wrong when listening to wifey “oh but them gold taps are so pretty” and “wallpaper is so much nicer” and you end up spending too much money on the place that you’ll never, ever get back. Most home buyers want a blank canvas that they can develop to their own tastes.

Presumably Council Tax has to be paid as well? Insurance?

I know it is never straightforward and there may be stuff I don't know about, but my inclination would be to get shot Ian......it will only become more of a problem as time moves on. The market is very flat at the moment (nothing to do with Brexit of course:rolleyes:) which, bizarrely, means that opportunities for developers are thin on the ground. Don't necessarily advertise at what the agents recommend - it makes bugger all difference to them what they sell it for in terms of commission, they just want to get a sale. They have barely any incentive to get top whack.

How I hate the colour "magnolia". Once upon a time it was known by its true name - beige.

Plenty of buyers want a place where they don't need to lift a finger, but I do agree that 'beige' is generally attractive to most people. I viewed a place years ago that had black tiles on the floor and scarlet walls everywhere. Probably stil on the market!

Gold taps are a definite no no:yikes:

Absolutely correct, a lot of buyers want somewhere that's clean tidy & functional so that they can move in & take their time to put their own mark on the place, obviously I don't know the condition of the house but the expense on most places is in central heating or a rewire if they are needed, double glazing, bathrooms & kitchens are not that expensive if you measure, buy & fit yourself & none of those jobs are really difficult, decoration is just effort costing less that a night in the pub per room & trade carpets can be had for not a lot in a whole house deal fitted

As with anything like this you just have to know where to look for the deals in your local area but every time you employ someone it comes out of your profit

Thanks for all the aforementioned comments, but what part of skint, does anyone not understand?? I live 200 miles away, and can't get up my own walls to paint or decorate, same for if I get on my knees I can't get up, "thank you stroke" our kid lives 100 miles away on a low paid wage works 6 days a week and has commitments every other weekend, he is trying to get on top of the decorating, but on his own it's hard going!! were aware that things are flat in the housing market, so aren't looking at the true value of the house, but we'll be buggered if we're giving the place away. :(

Well I for one didn't know you were that far away or that old sorry ill :D Skint I understand though so I suppose you have to weigh up if its costing you anything to keep hold of it & if so how much then balance that against getting shot for less than the market value
Not being funny but its dead money sat there unoccupied so another option is rent it out, that's a pain at times but at least you get an income & keep the house for if the market picks up

I wouldn't recommend being a 'long distance landlord'. Stuff happens and a lot of it managing agents aren't great at handling.

But I do agree, an empty property generally isn't great...... council tax, insurance (have you seen 'unoccupied' premiums :yikes: and risk of squatting/vandalism.

Either way, I am sure Ian has his own particular circumstances around this and we all want to help if we can.
