I generally have the satnag set to avoid toll roads, but today I wanted to burn some miles and also not get held up in the hell hole called Rouen.
First peage the card reader wouldn’t accept my credit card ‘carte refusee’ , I tried it several times, wiping it etc. so I then used the help button, told the operator what happened and she came out with a hand held unit, card accepted, €7.10, and I’m on my way again
Second peage, not to worry, card accepted €13.10
Third peage, once again ‘carte refusee’ , I tried it several times, including in the upper truck slot. So again I used the help button, and told the operator what happene, she then told me to use another card - ‘nope I don’t have one’ she then told me to use cash - ‘nope I don’t have any’ . There was then a flurry of rapid French too fast for me to make out - I believe it may have cast doubts on my parentage or why we didn’t need to save their asses in 2 world wars.
All of a sudden the barrier raised and the light went green, and I’m on my way again.
Moral to this - use a dud card and maybe get away free
