Not too surprised.. This whole area was sea after the ice age and later on rain forest.. Then we had another ice age which we are still coming out of ( a fact that many of the tree huggers pointedly ignore )... It only ( 
) 20000 years ago you could still walk to mainland Europe ( albeit, at that time, across ice, but the water level was about 130 mts lower than at the moment too, so even without the ice it would have been possible )
