Flipping

    When did this Americanism sneak into the English language?
    Apparently when you now sell a house, Jewellery, antiques etc you are flipping them.

    I thought that flipping was buying something and then immediately selling it on..hopefully making a few Bob in the process..

    It’s not new to me as it’s a term used with nauseous regularity on a watch forum I belong to. And, yes, it’s the ham shanks that started it but now most others use it. I don’t cos it’s irritating.

    It must be a northern thing.

    Possibly derived from the prevalent employment in the area - flipping burgers
