Our first tour abroard on our bike started on 16th June. I had to work until midday. Got home and loaded the panniers and topbox onto the bike and set off from mid Devon in rain! Weather did gradually get better the further east we headed towards Folkestone. We find our guest house that we had booked called Chandos which was pretty good has off road parking for bikes. Wake up bright and early the next morning full of excitement to a rainy day again. The channel tunnel is great and before we knew it we were in France. The A26 is right next to where you get off the train so was easy to find. Drizzly rain accompanied us for most of the time untill about a 100 miles down when we hit a big thunder storm. The high winds and heavy rain meant 40mph tops. The storm stayed with us for 20 minutes or so then we popped out the other side and were greeted by blue skys and hot as you like. This weather stayed with us for the rest of our trip.

Kept heading south until we reached Dijon which is about half way down and where we had booked an ibis hotel for the night. Great valiue for money.

The next morning we made an early start and kept heading south. We managed to eat up hundreds of miles on the first half and thought we would be at our eurocamp site in Castellane about mid afternoon. I didn't take into account that the motorway stops around a place called Grenoble then you are in the Alps and the roads are very twisty. Took alot longer that we were expecting. Got to Castellane at about 2000hrs just before it got dark. What a journey though from Grenoble to Castellane. These roads have to be some of the best bike roads in the world. It dd take us longer as we had to keep stopping to take photos! The scenery is out of this world, snow topped mountains and great weather, what more can you ask for!

Reached the camp site and not really knowing what to expect from a eurocamp site we were very pleased with what we found. Proper beds with thick mattresses, fridge/freezer, gas cooker, pots and pans, cups plates, everything you need. Best of all electric sockets! Glamping at its best.

Spent the first day enjoying lying in the sun and exploring the camp site. Found out the first night that French frogs are noisy. Wondered what it was to start with.

Visited St Tropez and Cannes. Parked up in a place called Ste-maxime and caught a ferry into St Tropez. Alot smaller town that i was expecting but it was nice to visit. Headed along the coast towards Cannes and found a nice beach for a spot of sunbathing. Was hoping to go on to Monaco but we spent too long on the beach and ran out of time. From Cannes we headed up to a place called Grasse. This place is mentally busy with traffic. From Grasse to Castellane the roads are fantastic. You can see why there are so many bikes there. Castellane is like a bike mecca and the square is always full of bikes especially on a Sunday.

Part 2 to follow soon. Click on the link below to see some of our photos. Thats if i can get the link copied across!

PART 2

We didn't go out touring every day as this was also a holiday for sun and just chilling. Luckily we had great weather after the dodgy start so spent quite a bit of time just lying in the sun. The river Verdon ran through the bottom of the campsite so we spent quite a bit of time beside the river.

The town of Castellane is a great town to spend some time. Loads of nice places to eat and the atmosphere is really good with all the bike from all around europe. It is also central to a lot of good places to visit so makes an ideal base.

We also visited the Gorge du Verdon which is the second biggest gorge in the world after the grand canyon. This is excellent riding as you can ride along one side and back along the other. There are some quite steep drops beside the roads which aids concentration! The water in the gorge are an amasing colour as you can see in the photos. We also stopped and hired a peddlow so we could go up through the gorge on the river. In hindsight it would have been worth paying extra and hiring a motor boat! This is a must visit place if you are in the area and the main reason for are visit after seeing it on youtube.

On the way home we decided to leave early in the morning before it got too hot. Left the campsite to a day that was just starting to warm up nicely. We headed for a town called Gap then on to Grenoble. As we got near to Gap we had to pull over and put more cloths on as it was so cold. I guess it's because we were higher in the mountains. There is a picture of a huge cloud over a mountain that was near Gap and brought with it sleet!

Once we had cleared the Alps the weather was hot and sunny again and gave us chance to warm up after shivering for a couple of hours. Stopped in Dijon again in the same ibis which had rooms spare. Met up with 3 other English bikers who had done a similar route to ours but had toured around more and had their own tents. After talking to them about what we did they said that next year they will look into a eurocamp site so they don't have to carry all their own gear.

Left Dijon early the next morning and headed for Calais for the Channel tunnel. The idea was to stend the night around Calais before heading back to England. Got to Calais at about 1700hrs and decided to catch the train back that evening. Because of the hour time difference we were back in Folkestone at about 1700hrs. Thats when we made a bad decision! Some of you will have already guessed what that decission was as i am sure we are not the only ones to do it. Are we? We got to thinking that we could be home in our own bed in 5 hours. Really bad move! After travelling for nearly 600 miles and 14 hours later we were home but my god we were aching all over and i was so tired. Well you live and learn. We won't fall into that trap again.

I will write what we would do different and prices soon.

Hi Steve.

I would highly recommend the area around Castellane as a base. Its a great bike town with loads of bars and places to eat. The good thing about staying in a tent in the Alps is that its hot during the day and cools down alot during the night so that you can sleep well. Also no mossies to worry about.

Theres a good video on youtube of 2 couples touring around the gorge. Run a search for motorcycle tour gorge du verdon bandit 1250 by a guy called Phil wyatt.
