Most people just unscrew them, to get them off.
No need to get a can opener on it.

I'm sure I wasn't the first and I'm equally sure I won't be the last person to have to resort to whacking an old screwdriver through an oil filter to get if off.

Ford OHC were notorious for it.

What's really annoying is filters placed so that oil runs down the casing.
Bird being a case in point.

I think the Golf was the same.

The Seat Leon filter lifts up out of the unit, you just have to dodge the hoses and cables.

The old mini was good too it dropped down from bracket.

The Burgman filter base if away from the casing, no mess, although a lot of oil comes out when you take it off.
