Hi ya

Quick question for seasoned travellers to France. Only ever flown before taking bike for first time, are the ferries fussy about what you carry eg multitools or camping knives in you tool kit in your bike luggage.(don't want my decent kit swiped by customs)

If it's anything like the chunnel they dont seem to care what you carry.
No one has ever looked over the bike or the rucksack when boarding the train.

Knives

Only once at Dover ferry port have we been diverted into a hanger type building for security staff to stop us & ask if we had any blades / knives etc.
when we said yes a multi tool & Swiss Army knife, he bid us Bon voyage, and sent us on our way.

About 12 years ago I took my pet tarantula's over to France as I relocated for work
I asked before I travelled what I needed .... No one seemed to know, so I took the Latin names, a reference book with pics and the said spiders in two small tanks along with with all my other luggage

I went to the British customs first and asked what I needed, much chatting and phone calls later ... They still didn't know .
So I had what paperwork I had stamped and was to told to see the French customs and hand the forms in

I get to the French customs and drive to the declare side ... The custom man waved me on .... I stopped .... He mumbled something and waved me on
I got out of the car and went to show him my paperwork .... He looked blank and annoyed that I had stopped...
I showed him the stamped paperwork ... He didn't understand what it was for
So I showed him the two spiders
I've never seen a Frenchman move so fast !!
He was back behind his glass fronted both thrusting the papers thru the slot and waving at me and shouting "Allez, allez.... !"

I tried to be honest but I think by the look on the customs man face that he thought it was a frog eating tarantula !!!

Coming back a year or so later .... A similar story !!!

I think unless it's drugs, drink, or dodgy merchandise .... You should be fine!

Considering we go over in the motorhome a few times a year and have everything INCLUDING the kitchen sink on board, I do not think you are likely to be bothered .. Guns of any sort ( even little plastic obviously toy ones ) are to be avoided at all costs though !
