Ok, so they go up from time to time but we’re coming to the end of our contract and prices have absolutely sky-rocketed. Been on the comparison sites and our best plan based on annual usage for both fuels is £234 a month. What the actual phuck is all that about?

My fixed contract is about to end and I was throwing a few phuks about earlier about how much it is about to go up to. But I'm a lot happier now I've seen how dear yours is! You heating an 18 bedroom castle with no roof?

F*ck me, that's outrageous. That's 3 month's dual fuel for us for 3 people in a 3 bedroom semi.

And we are usually in credit at the end of the year.

We're with Octopus.

My house isn’t small but it’s not that big.

We were with GNE and they went bust, and it’s not difficult to see why.

Not sure if I mentioned this before but our central heating was hopelessly inefficient with some radiators not working and half the ones that did were too small for the room they were in. We’ve had the entire set downstairs ripped out and replaced, an extra one added in the hall and three swapped upstairs for bigger ones. I’m hoping that reduces the amount of gas we use. Last year with the crap radiators, it was on full tilt all day and it was farting uphill into thunder.

EDF have estimated our gas consumption for the year as 39,000kwh!

We have 6 radiators - 1 in each bedroom, 1 in the bathroom and 2 in the livingroom. Replacing the boiler a couple of years back made a fair difference to our bill, with about £300 a year savings.

We pay £88 a month and that always leaves us in credit at the end of each year. Octopus let you transfer that back if you want.

7 radiators and £90 a month here.

You may have to suck it up this year, as it will be based on previous usage, but next year should be a lot cheaper. You can probably get it re-assessed half way through the term.

12 radiators £95 per month with eon. I did upgrade the system a couple of years ago. The new boiler is far more efficient which helped. But the big saving comes from the Tado controller which is far smarter than I am and turns the heating off when I go out. And makes sure it is back up to temperature by the time I get home. I've also added their individual radiator thermostats so that I only heat the bits of the house I actually use.

Fair outlay to do this but I will get that back and start to see a profit if I can live for another 3 years....

4 bed stone cottage complete with draught's and a wife that has ice for blood. Two log burners (lounge & dinning room)usually evenings only, 3100kw of electric and around 4000 litres of bulk LPG firing a three year old combi feeding 13 rads and a range hob. Wood mostly free or around £100 for a load which should last the winter, £540 on electric via Utility point £1200 for LPG.

14 radiators, two linked to hot water circuit, modern Valiant condensing boiler, smart/adaptive temperature controls, silly amounts of loft and wall insulation, double glazed…..£65 per month and we are well in credit.we do benefit from the sun shining directly into the main living areas which heats the place pretty well, even in winter.

The boiler is the biggest saving (changed it when we moved in), the smart/adaptive temperature controls definitely help,as does having the system split in two; the bedrooms circuit is kept much cooler than the rest of the house.

Another big saving is being able to check what the room thermostat has been set to when I’m out by ‘someone’, nice feeling being able to turn it down remotely:sisi1

1903 built (with a couple of 80s extensions) house with 20 radiators.

EDF took our supply over after GNE went to the wall. Presently charging us £153/month but we’re in debit because of the cold winter (Mrs P is always f’ing cold!) and a shit central heating system. It should be significantly more efficient now we’ve changed everything and added a Hive so I’m hoping EDF’s assessment is on the high side (39,000 kWh of gas per year, FFS!) but I won’t know for a while as the heating is not going on until October. I’m also going to read both meters every month to keep an eye on things. They review every six months and adjust the direct debit accordingly.

We’ve just been offered a three year fixed-rate deal with EDF, apparently exclusive to ex-GNE customers, and it’s the cheapest tariff I can find, cheaper than even the smaller outfits. Money Saving Expert can’t get close either. The prices are good but not sure I want to be tied in for three years.

Here’s a thought, particularly useful for anyone in a bungalow as installation is easy….heat recovery system. Doesn't cost a lot and simple to install, extracts heat from the outgoing air and redirects it where needed most while swapping stale air for fresh. Becoming commonplace in new builds. I’ll be doing a simplified one at some point using a couple of inline fans to channel the warm air from the airing cupboard where the hot water tank is into the bathrooms.

Read yesterday that one of the gas suppliers can't remember which one is to put up their prices by 21% due to wholesale price increases.

We’ve been shopping around this morning and can’t find anything close to what EDF have offered us. There’s a few with slightly lower daily standing charges but the unit costs are higher. I think I’m gonna have to stay with and keep an eye on our usage; 39,000 kWh gas per year cannot be right!
