Had a meeting with the Governor this morning regarding my long term sick & the result of the occupational health call.
Long story short, I have two options, resign or be dismissed, the Governor was really good & explained the reasons for my options, dismissed I get three Month’s notice & three Month’s pay, resign is immediate but head held high, he shook my hand & told me to ring him & he’ll arrange for me to return to the Prison to say my goodbyes.
End of an era but going with my head held high.

FFS dismissed.
Very considerate sensitive employer.

What does your union say.
Is there precedence for this kind of treatment.

FFS.

What does your contract say.

The Governor had no option, I am over 60 & already partially retired, a union rep who is also a good friend was with me, the occupational health report stated that I could not return in any capacity, I have no complaints at how the Governor handled the meeting & explained the options, the fact that he broke social distancing to shake my hand meant a lot.

I doubt there would be any breach of contract. Whilst it does happen, they would be in deep, deep shit if they didn't get something like this right.

I guessed there was a previous discussion but still I think a more subtle approach could have been employed.

I was involved with teachers union for long years and saw some very bad treatment attempts by college. Ended up with external inquiry with retired high court judge.

That was a fascinating experience. In the end a head of department resigned and his son expelled.

The son somehow was able to exactly reproduce, in the exam, model answers which he "couldn't have seen", including mistakes in a matrix for surveying.

I and chairman were interviewed by judge. We came out thinking he was losing it because he kept asking same questions. Then we began to realise he was checking our story and to see if we had learned it off.

His report on the son's interview was amusing. The son gave him some guff.
But his response was good.

Basically the final line was that anybody in management who had half a brain woul know he had been given the exam papers before the exam.

I'm sort of sorry to read this, Dezza, but at the same time I'm happy that your Governor gave you the option to leave on your terms. It seems that he was decent about it, not like a 30 year old career civil service manager that doesn't know shit from clay.

Another positive, with your prison pension you should be able to buy a proper car. Drop me a PM and I'll put you in touch with my BM dealer :p

Best wishes for your retirement and congratulations on a distinguished career. It takes balls like church bells to do a job like that and I'm buggered if I could do it :beer-toast1:

Minefield.

One of the ladies who worked for me developed Parkinson's in her late thirties. Tragic.

After I moved on her boss persuaded her to go part time which she didn't really want but was forced into a corner. Personally I thought it was completely unnecessary.

Less than a year later she was made redundant and was paid out on the basis of part time rather than the 24 years of full time distinguished service she gave.

I am still fighting her case for her four years on and believe that an out of court settlement is now likely.

Forgive me for asking Derek but how does that work? I would expect retirement due to ill health?

Well, it is indeed a sad day for you, but there are many upsides to it all mate...
Do not look back, look forward... More time to spend with the grand kids, more me time, and far less stress... It will do you the world of good

It all amounts to the same thing, I can no longer carry out the duties required so it’s resign or be dismissed, unfortunately that’s how it works these days, no bitterness towards the Governor, he could not have been nicer about it, he genuinely seemed gutted that it had come to this, onwards & upwards.

Sorry to hear that.
At least you seem to have been expecting it.
I too would have hoped they would have had some sort of "retirement due health" mechanism to ease things?

As Jaws said, look forward not back. I'm being made redundant from the Civil Service after 32 years as I'm not prepared to travel to Stratford (from South Lincolnshire) every day to work. Roll on 1 January when I'm free to find other work.

Hopefully, unlike me you don't still have to find another 8 years work to pay your mortgage.

Unfortunately, as I've seen with some colleagues, trying to get ill health retirement from the Civil Service is virtually impossible. I wish you well for your retirement.

When will Boris be dismissed???

Most of us have dismissed him for the bumbling fool he is a long time ago :p

Good luck for the future Derek, I know you will have earned a rest from a job like yours & you have plenty to keep you busy if thats what you want, enjoy it mate (y)

So sorry to hear this. Personally, I’d go for the 6 months pay, unless there’s a particular reason you don’t want to. And if you can, retire fully, I’d also be looking for a doctor to recommend a DWP-PIP to show you’re unable to continue working.
