Bev’s brother collects German militaria, in December he bought some German ww2 items, they arrived today, ebay have charged him extra tax as we are now out of the EU

Originally vat and import duty used to be collected ( sometimes ) at the point of entry by the carrier
As of a few weeks ago HMRC changed the rules and now expect retailers to collect the VAT for them.. Until Jan 1st it was mainly stuff from the U S and China
Of course that now includes Europe
To simplify matters eBay as the intermediary are now tasked with working for HMRC the same as other firms.. basically eBay is a massive shipping agent without all the hassle apart from being a tax collector
