eBay bidding frenzy

I was looking for an item earlier. The manufacturers are out of stock waiting for supplies, their 3 distributors have no stock either, so I turned to eBay.

I did my search with maker, name and product number and found several for sale. The start prices were good, so I had a bid, the bids went up and up and up. The first for £72 + £3p&p. Too dear for me. The second a half hour later for £85 + £3.85 p&p. What! New when available they’re something like £65.

I then did a search for just the maker, then scrolled through dozens of hits, until I found exactly what I wanted on a buy it now @ £55. Sorted. paid for, and no need for any bidding war.

I find a lot of stuff on eBay is more expensive than buying new. Needed a part for my Merc a few months ago. From memory the part I wanted was £165 + £120 P&P (from USA, not available in the UK) and they had sold a few. £34 from the local Merc dealer.

Another part I wanted for my Trophy, £27 used, or £6.33 new from another online source.

ebay seems to be more & more full of chancers & cheap tat. People seem to think that if it's an auction its cheap to buy or a good deal without doing any homework. I find I buy less & less from eBay as i usually find a better deal elsewhere.

Oddly the I recently bought a PC monitor used from eBay for £35, a nice 24" widescreen Samsung, so deals are there to be had if you look.

I see it all the time, but if you use a bit of common sense and look elsewhere as well bargains can be had

The one that makes me laugh every time is Aldi or Lidl specials being sold on ebay for twice the price a couple of days after they hit the store and idiots buying them

Buddy has outgrown his crate so I went to b&m to get him a bigger one £29.99, as his medium crate is only a couple of Months old & still in excellent condition I thought I would advertise it through a local selling site, the crate is a heavy duty one made by Kong, & has front & side doors, I paid over £60 for it so I advertised it at £35 expecting someone to offer £30, I got a response from a “lady”??? “Why are you ripping people off? You can get large crates for under £30,” foolishly I responded & politely asked her to google Kong crates, her response “Kong crates are over priced, you can get a large crate for £30 that does the job.
I then informed her that if she didn’t want to buy it then to kindly keep her negative comments to herself, I then get a response “Ha, you are being rude as you’ve been found out, I’m just saying what I think & you can’t handle it so you resort to being rude”.
Before I could answer somebody else stepped in & put “come along Liz, time for your meds”

I very often buy cleaning stuff for the car off eBay. I buy direct from whichever BM main stealer is punting the gear out that I want at the cheapest price. Always works out much cheaper than going to a local dealer.

The problem is that a lot of people with a low brain cell quantity believe ebay is cheaper and don't do their homework.

I will never bid on an item until 8 seconds from the end, literally!

Bidding early allows other bidders time to up their bid.
Or as I have had happen, the bid was raised by an unscrupulous bid from a sellers 'second' account!
(That was done by a big seller selling oak furniture which I proved was being done by looking through their selling history.
Ebay weren't interested, probably because of the income they were receiving!)

Don't know if you still can but if you go onto the bid history, you used to be able to click on the bidders 'coded' identity.
While the persons identity is kept hidden you could see some of their activity from which you could estimate what sort of bidder they are and the bid they had entered.
(Their bid could have been £20 but it may only show £9 as the highest bid.)
