Kindle if you buy your books from Amazon. Kobo if you buy ebooks elsewhere.
Both makes now do waterproof models.

If she reads a lot of ebooks which include illustrations or photos then consider a cheap tablet instead and install the Kindle app.

Unless she reads dozens of books a week then don't get suckered into buying a model with large storage (Eg 32g or more). You can put hundreds of text only books on an 8g model.

we have an Amazon Fire, works exactly as it should, battery life is excellent, wifi is great, all works well, no problems.
we did buy the Ad free version, worth the little extra I reckon.

The problem I found the Fire an issue is the battery life
My normal Kindle paper white thing needs charing about once a month using it for about 30 - 40 minutes a day ( I read in bed ! )

I was given a Fire earlier this year and to start with liked it.. But got fed up charging the battery at least once a week

Mrs has a Kindle, I have a Kobo. Mrs often complains about the sort function but aside from that she likes it. Battery seems to last as long as the one in my Kobo. Both of us are avid readers and have had them for about 4 years with no storage space issues. Both connect with WiFi.

Kobo is a little cheaper to buy but book prices are about the same as is choice of title.

Not much to choose between them really unless you have an Amazon prime account, then probably go for Kindle.

Kindle paperwhite. There is a huge range of free books, I’ve read hundreds & can’t recall a bad one.
Just reading the latest Solomon carter novel, between two thieves, been waiting for this to come out, his books are addictive, and free.

Not something I am overly into personally (I like holding a book) but check out your library for stuff you can download - my local library has a huge selection, only done a couple myself onto iPad, just an alternate approach.

Much as I like books I've dropped too many in the bath over the years. My waterproof Kindle has saved me a small fortune... ;)

I must admit I prefer a book, but my kindel has some advantages, one I am short of storage room at home for all of the books I read and secondly it has a built in dictionary so I don't have to keep getting my paper copy out to check up on words :)
