I have always been one that within seconds of head hitting pillow, out like a light until morning, since dickhead walked out on my daughter I have not had a full night’s sleep, at first I was kept awake with thoughts of killing him but I can honestly say that he is that irrelevant it is not him keeping me awake anymore.

It's been proven that having your bedroom well ventilated and cool is far better for quality sleep than it being warm and stuffy.

Personally, my sleep pattern is totally fecked since I took this supposed fill-in job doing shift work.... 1 week - 14:00- 22:15, 1 week - 22:00 - 06:15.

Getting in on lates and going to bed shortly after doesn't work for me as my mind's still too active for a couple of hours after getting in.
Sleep after a night shift comprises of 6 hours at most and even then I'll only manage to get 2 hour stretches at a time before waking up for half an hour or so.

The only quality sleep I'm getting is at the weekends. The problem with having a shit sleep pattern is that the effects are cumulative and none of them are good for your health.... and there's no such thing as being able to "catch up" on your sleep deficit.

I've worked shifts for 35yrs and it never bothered me, then, I can't remember why but, they took us off nights for about 3 months.
I then had a month on furlough, so in all this time I was in my own bed at night.
Back on shifts again doing nights and it's crippling me! We now have to do a week of 8hr nights which we didn't do before, so with that and four hrs kip
(that's all I get during the day no matter how tired I am) by the end of the week I'm walking around like a zombie!

It's not only your sleeping habits.
When I eventually found a regular day time job and after doing 20+ years as a shift worker. The first months bodily functions was all over the place, body clock was regulated to only having a dump late at night.
Now I just think....Feck it!
This man diaper don't look too bad.
Awkward getting me leathers on mind.

I've worked shifts for most of my working life.
Currently rotating shifts days and nights.
As others have said sleeping properly after nights is impossible.
Our pattern is also complicated as we have a 100 hrs "training bank" of hours which are allocated to our days off as/when the company wants.
With the changes we've had to agree to with covid (in order to protect/save jobs) we now also have "standby" shifts.
These are a pain as we could get called for either a day or a night, if not called in the morning for the day you can still get called for the night anytime.

You won't like this but generally they say alcohol is not good for sleep and is a depressive.
I know some of you will not believe it, but both me and her rarely imbibe ... About the only time we normally partake is when we are with others... but I admit than when I do get going I tend to pig out !!!!

Having said that, desperate times call for desperate measures..................
Last night, in an attempt to pass out for the night, I got well stuck in to a bottle of Sambuca I was given for Christmas.. so much so that I finished the bottle !!!
Went to bed about midnight and woke up at 7 craving a pee.. Went back to bed and stayed there until 0830 :)

I stopped worrying about not being able to sleep well years ago. It’s a horrible thing and worrying only makes it worse. I’ll be honest it is much easier to cope with when not working as i don’t have the thought that the alarm clock is going off shortly.

Plenty of evidence that the current pandemic is causing a sleep problem for a lot of people.

Things that help me;

  1. Reading....but it is essential to stop before you fall asleep while doing it, as soon as you feel the eyes going put the book down and light off - waking up again when the book falls over negates the benefit and I just get frustrated when I can’t nod off again
  2. having a ‘project’ to focus on in your mind - I have developed a number of plans for building a house, takes quite a few weeks to develop a new design. Try and picture it. Dream garage of ten cars is under constant review. If you ever crack that reduce it to six cars. Basically try and think about what you want to think about, not what is on your mind.
  3. If you wake up during the night read. No tv, screens or even wandering off to the fridge
  4. minimise the bedding to what just keeps you warm enough. Getting too hot is a sure fire way of waking up
  5. take exercise every day
All little things but they add up to making a difference to me.
I do most of the above. If I wake up in the middle of the night and I'm still awake in 20 minutes, then I get up for half an hour and try again.

Couple of other tips:

1. No caffeine after 1500 hours (doesn't apply to me as I'm caffeine sensitive and can't deal with it any time);
2. Don't drink anything an hour before bed.
3. If there's shit rattling around in your head, write it down. It'll still be there in the morning and it frees the mind of worrying about forgetting it.
4. I don't find going to the fridge a worry, especially if I'm thirsty. Sometimes a mug of hot milk can send me back off, providing I can be arsed to go get it.

Last drink I had was two glasses of red with Christmas dinner. it's not alcohol that disturbs my sleep.

Said "fuck it, I'm going out on my bike". So I did. Only for an hour. Did about 60 miles, and thoroughly enjoyed every single one of them! Did my head the world of good too.

If you’re tossing and turning in bed, try Babestation, that’ll get a load of yer mind.................so a friend assures me (y).
If your tossing and turning, try focussing on the tossing aspect. That'll get yer off. In both ways (y)

Matthew Walkers book 'Why We Sleep" is worth a read if you're struggling with sleeping.. His explanation as to why alcohol isn't good for quality sleep is the reason why I rarely drink in the evening now.

Installed another outdoor socket at the front of this house. This one can be used as a twilight switched supply or a 24hr supply as I have done some tricky wiring.

Can they sack you for giving false advice.

This reminds me, I was once at Squires & bumped into a red bird owner, we got chatting & he said “do you know Jaws?” I said “yes” I asked “have you ever met him?” He replied “Jaws isn’t a person it’s just the name of a shop”
