Interesting drivers of manual vehicles

It occurred to me last night (circa 3.30am) that a time will come when no one will be able to drive a manual car.

At the moment if you pass your driving test in a manual car you can drive an automatic but not the other way round.

In the future driving schools will only be able to buy EV's 99.999% of which are automatic.

Therefore in the future no one will be able to drive a manual boxed vehicle.

(after considering the problem for 1/2 hour went back to sleep)

Auto gearbox are so good now I will never consider a manual. In ye days of olde they used to be uneconomical - I remember having a 2.0 litre Mondeo company car with a three speed auto that I only got about 22mpg from. Current steed with a somewhat larger lump will easily do over 40mpg on a motorway run and over 30mpg in daily use.

My mate in Wales has always bought manual - when I asked him why he said ‘for the driving experience’. My response, which I kept to my myself, was ‘the driving experience of being in the wrong gear half the time%?’.

All that dosh for such an uneconomical car, 20 years ago 40mpg was considered good, cars now are capable of over 60mpg, my Megane (63 plate) given the right conditions would do 80mpg

I Would hazard a guess that 20 years ago something with the cc and power output of mine would be low double figures.

SPM figure is also very, very important.

Loving people outing themselves as poor drivers and trying to justify their lack of ability. :meparto:

A few years ago I was at my mate's place in Australia and he had just bought a 750 Honda with a two speed auto gearbox! Went for a ride on it! What a bag of sh*te!

My Mercedes SLK had an autobox and correspondingly low MPG, averaged 27mpg I think, compared to my Volvo which averages around 40mpg.

I'm not adverse to an autobox and quite like them, but I don't mind manual boxes either.

My next car will probably be a manual, or auto - I'm rally not bothered either way, as long as its comfy.

I agree! I drive a Volvo S80 3.2 with the 6-speed geartronic box! Very nice to drive! Also my work truck, A Scania R450 is an auto!

My left leg doesn't work to well so I'm an auto convert, the ZF eight speed is brilliant.

Either way many modern autos have the option of switching to manual and using the shifter or paddles if the itch needs to be scratched. Essentially a sequential clutch less gearbox.

I have tried it a couple of times but can’t really see the point. Might be good for track use I suppose.

I do occasionally use the paddles for engine braking but that’s it.

I was thinking about "classic" cars most of which have are manual and in the future no one will be able to drive them unless they can have automatic boxes fitted retrospectively

You never said :risas3:

i Had a stick shift as a loaner and once I got over the initial shock I was fine, despite not having driven one for probably fifteen years.

’Classic ‘ cars are a whole different thing…even something awesome like an early E Type is a difficult drive compared to anything remotely modern. And probably slower - (early E Type c7 seconds to sixty) and grip more comparable to,a skateboard compared to modern stuff.

Still lust after one though…..

There are rumours they are planning of doing away with the requirement to pass your test in a manual car to get a “manual car licence”.

The first time I ever drove an auto …. Was on my Florida Driving test !
it wasn’t my car, I had only sat in the passenger seat a couple of times, it was an estate and my first ever time driving an auto, and parallel park on the opposite side of the road

I passed !!

Since my teenage driving test I have always driven a manual
Today I drive an auto as a daily …. Merc 7 speed auto is seamless !!
I also have a manual with my Cobra lookalike

there are times I enjoy driving the manual, but the auto is so smooth, it’s a no brainier for the future !!
