The only two vehicles I had in the past I'd like again are a VW Type 2 with a Westphalia conversion, but the chances of finding an affordable one I can just jump in & drive is pretty limited, and possibly a Suzuki GT250 X7.

I thought about a GT380 but then remember how bad the handling was. It is possible to upgrade the suspension, brakes and with a set of modern tyres it can be a passable ride, but then unlike its GT550 & GT750 cousins, it doesn't have a push button start & I'm too old for that kick start sh1t.

I'll stick to my 1993 Trophy & 1997 Daytona I think.

I had a GT380 for quite a while - it was shite, and was made worse when I decided a 3 into 1 system would be a good choice. Nope, it wasn’t.

I had one when I was an apprentice. I thought crashing it into a ditch might improve it. Nope, it didnt.

I thought I had straightened it out pretty well until I got to the chain alignment. The new owner didnt appear to notice though. :)

It’s a good point. Cars from the 1920s/30s/40s and 1905-10, gorgeous as many of them are, have plummeted in value as the generations that lusted after them when they couldn't afford them are sadly disappearing.

Pre 1905 stuff has tremendous value as a) it is right at the start of the automotive world (little did they realise how it would muck up the environment as well as causing never ending tension and unrest in the middle/far east but that’s another story) and (mainly b) it qualifies for the London to Brighton rally. If the criteria for the rally was changed to (say) pre-1910 a new market would be created and the value of @906-1909 would shoot up for cars built in that period.

Currently the value of 1960s motor such as the glorious Mk2 Jaguar are slowly sliding as the number of potential buyers is falling. Even E Types, one of the most iconic and arguably desirable cars ever built, have generally stopped appreciating - the clever investors will have cashed in maybe five years ago when they were at their peak.

Many People of ‘our’ generation are now in a position to buy the cars they lusted after in their youth - Cosworths, Mk2 Escorts and Cortinas, Capris, Elans and the like…all of which have crazy values. None of which are truly great cars, but that’s not the point.

Clever investors will be looking at what today’s youth lust after as they will almost certainly increase in value in the future as that generation becomes more affluent.

If there is any petrol left to drive them.
By total coincidence there was an article on Auto Mondial this morning saying pretty much what I said above - prices for 90’s, noughties and 10’s classics are going through the roof.

Who would have guessed they follow this forum?

Thinking further on it, I reckon derek kelly is being very shrewd with his Dacia Jogger - keep it for fifteen years and it will be a classic and worth a fortune.

He’ll double it’s value if he puts new wiper blades on it.

Good news for my 1997 Daytona, not so good for my 1993 Trophy though. a recent news item & a bit of research suggested the original Strontium Yellow Daytona with all original bars, exhausts etc. are slowly climbing in value. The Trophy is a tank so don't count on values rising although it's unlikely to drop - just hang on to it if you like riding it.
