When I have had a cup of tea to calm my nerves I will post an unbiased like for like comparison against a proper petrol car - there may be one positive for the diesel.....

So, impressions when comparing to my petrol equivalent with similar bhp.....albeit the 330d is a 6 cylinder 2993cc compared to my four pot twin turbo 2000cc (designated as '328'). The diesel is about .5 of a second quicker to 62.

- the diesel does have impressive grunt from standstill...but it holds the gears much longer than the petrol model while accelerating and 'kicks down' much more frequently once on the move to maintain momentum when the go pedal is depressed
- the cabin noise levels are significantly higher in the diesel, very noticeable as I stepped out of one into the other this morning
- mpg...now this is interesting...the diesel shows a recorded average mpg of 41.7' the petrol 43.9. I suppose as the diesel is used as a courtesy car it may get a bit of a hammering at times so maybe an allowance for that, but......
- emissions - almost identical according to the manufacturer
- due to changes in the model range no price comparisons are available between diesel and petrol.......but the 330d option adds £7255 to the cost compared to the 'standard' 2.0 diesel, albeit adding significant (and much needed) performance

As an aside, getting into a low spec model made me realise how you have to pay extra for pretty much everything on a BMW. Pretty basic as a standard.

By coincidence, Mrs B has just got back from a shopping trip in the diesel...first thing she said was 'it's really noisy isn't it?'. Second thing was 'the black interior is claustrophobic'.

The third thing was 'do you want a toasted cheese and ham panini for lunch?'

At least I have a way of not being recognised while being seen driving a diesel...

The more I drive it the less I like it. Always seems to be either struggling to find the right gear or holding in gear too long.

However, the low down punch is impressive as I discovered when overtaking a slow moving bus this morning. Not so good when accelerating from a moderate speed, the impetus is provided by dropping gears rather than unleashing power from the motor.
The constant droning noise from under the bonnet is wearing.

I'll be sticking to petrol.(y)

The boot on the 3 Series saloon is stupid small, could barely get my golf clubs in it this morning. Can get two sets in the boot of my GT with room to spare.

What a load of shite.

My diesel is not noisy compared to a petrol. I can only think, as you've already noted, that yours was a courtesy car and had probably been ragged. one is also a high-spec model so might have better insulation.

Mine goes like greased weasel shit from standstill or from a modest speed, but then mine does have over 50bhp more than the 330d.

As for the black interior, I've always found BMWs (and German cars in general, to be honest) a little depressing but not claustrophobic. I wanted the cream 'Individual' leather on mine but I let the salesman and Mrs P talk me out of it. From a practicality standpoint, I guess they were right but I still half wish I'd stood my ground.

So having noticed the 3 series boot is very small, now you know why I opted for the Touring (I prefer estates to saloon cars anyway, but that's just one of many reasons).

You should be made to wear a bag over your head all the time :p

Noisy

Noisy

Noisy.

Getting back into the proper pertrol car was joyous...I had to keep checking the rev counter to make sure the engine was running.

I did concede that low down grunt is impressive, albeit it is partially achieved by holding gears until the rev limiter is hit. Not exactly a relaxing experience.

I got an emissions ticket while driving the courtesy diesel in London.....can't really argue as they provided photographic evidence......

'Tumbled' actually.

And please don't ever again say that a BMW diesel is as quiet as a petrol BMW - it just isn't!!
I'd have to agree that yours is particularly quiet. As it seems to spend most of its life in the dealers workshop.

And you have the beginnings of weed growth.

My BMW diesel is as quiet and actually cleaner than a petrol equivalent. It’s mahooooosively faster and significantly, ore economical, too :p
