I owe derek kelly a small measure of gratitude. Normally, I have no qualms whatsoever stepping outside my comfort zone except when I'm cooking and someone else has to eat it. Not so long ago, Dezza posted "if you can read, you can cook" and it turns out he wasn't wrong.

Mrs P came home from Dubai last night, she'd been up since two in the morning. I don't particularly like her coming in from work when she's been up all night and then driven two and a half hours home and then having to cook. I almost always cook on those occasions but tend to keep it simple, like sausage and chips but not yesterday, oh no. She's been working like a bastard through covid so I thought I'd treat her, whilst trying not to give her burnt offerings or botulism. I did lamb shanks in a red wine reduction in the slow cooker, served on a base of buttered mash with a side of tender stem broccoli from a recipe I found on the interweb.

I wish I'd taken some pictures now but suffice to say Mrs P was seriously impressed and I have enough brownie points to keep me going until Wednesday morning when she buggers off to Houston. Job done.

Cooking really is simple & when you get more confidence start experimenting, don’t stick rigidly to recipes, add your own touches, many recipes call for ingredients we may not like (celery) replace them with something you do like.

I'm not sure swapping the celery for marzipan would've worked....................
