I went to school with a chap called Jonathan Owen who was the son of the guy who invented Basil Brush (Ivan Owen). This from my days when I grew up in Weybridge in Surrey where many of the big names lived and still live

We as kids were very fortunate that when we had birthday parties we often used to get surprise visits from Basil (and Ivan) and on one occasion I met Derek who at that time was a young man (I am going back to the 60's)

I remember him being a really nice chap and spent ages with us snotty nosed kids but also took time out to talk to our parents without any airs or graces. A real genuine and nice chap.

I never forgot that one encounter I had with him, and always smiled at the fact that he eventually found his niche role in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister.
