Read one or two postings regarding seats.
If it was the only mod I was allowed to make to a Bird, changing the seat would be it. I was lucky and found a nearly new one ("custom seats") on a salvage bike in Bradford and they took forty quid and my standard seat in exchange... wow what a transformation.
No more of the arse slipping backwards under acceleration and really comfy on long runs.
