i don't know if they are all the same - our local depot sells a lot of 'rescued' stuff on site.

I have recently bought a couple of ride on toys for when the grandson visits for £5 each, good as new after a quick wash. Tons of toys available.

a couple of massive toolboxes for £8, including an as new Stanley job that is over £40 in Screwfix.

Tons of hand tools available, loads of nice internal doors, sets of golf clubs, sets of weights, usable garden furniture, tins of unopened paint, all sorts of stuff.

Have a look next time you visit yours.

Good for the environment to buy used if nothing else.

I have had a few good things from tip shops over the years & am always amazed at the stuff folk throw away.

And by coincidence I have just got back from the local site after getting rid of some timber with......a 210l water butt, complete with lid, stand and fittings for £10. Good as new, saved me about £60.

Up here, they don't even let you "swap" junk before it goes in the skips, let alone buy anything, everyone knows full well the council workers dib in when the gates shut. :(

They stopped it here after the recycling centre was taken over by a private company. I've seen some good usable stuff go into the skips & be crushed.

10 miles down the road in Peterborough, i'm not entirely sure what happens but there used to be a 2nd hand/junk stall in the local market & you quite often used to see stuff you'd taken to the tip appear in the market for sale the following week. Not sure if that kind of thing still goes on as the stall has now gone.

As Ian says, very strict rules up here, it is a Spanish company that owns the sites, if an employee is caught skip dipping he will be sacked, more cameras & security than a Government building.

Find this all a bit odd...when you buy something down here the cash is deposited through a slot in a sealed security box. So no chance of cash going walkers.

Why wouldn't anyone want to sell perfectly decent stuff? Unless the health and safety police are all over it....

Labour controlled council, they tend to judge everyone by their own low standards, and if "the rules" say no making money on the side, it doesn't happen even if they shoot themselves in the trotter, like normal.

Why do seagulls have wings? To beat you lot to the tip.:D Every time I go to the tip here the same half dozen "scroungers" watch what is being left and grab anything worth selling. I'm not sure about payment but I have bought several things over the years for peanuts.

Our council tip doesn't even like letting people in let alone selling stuff. Labour council as well

Our local council tip is big on proper recycling & they encourage you to leave stuff at the side of the skips if you think it might be saleable, the tip shop is run by a local charity & they collect it up or sling it as they please, its run by volunteers & I believe all the money goes to the charity

Where I used to live the tip although owned by the council isn't run by them but was instead put out to tender which they had to pay a decent amount to secure for the year, they only make money off what they can sell either at their own little shop or from recycling of the waste & I think that is the difference
