Conserve ?

Is conserve just a posh word for jam? Or is it something completely
different? I only ask as i have just had a cup of tea and a conserve butty and
it just doesnt sound right...
Oh..and I dont usually eat conserve sandwiches ,its only because there is
a total absence of biscuits and what not in the cupboard.
