Have an old laptop sitting around which I've not used for ages with Windows XP on it.

Had tried a couple of times to install W7 on it but it didn't seem to like it .. even when it did install I was getting screen artifacts etc.

So .. re-installed XP and then set about doing the updates etc....

taking so long that partway through I got bored ....

as I had a copy of Ubuntu 10.04 sitting around I thought .. hmmm why not try it...

So I did ..... so far the verdict is .... bloody brilliant.

The whole thing installed quickly .. the few updates needed were equally quick.

Dead easy to find and install new software .. usually multiple options for whatever you need.

Early days but so far I'm impressed @tu*

It is taking some getting used to the layout and protocols etc .. being used to windows means it's a new learning process.

I use ubuntu as a second operating system on my laptop and it's great. I use centos on my servers which is also good.

As long as you don't need certain software Linux is brilliant, especially since it's free@tu*

I installed Ubuntu server on a rackmount machine I had spare, but it was lacking in a lot of things I like. Looked pretty though. I liked the command-line installation of applications and how it worked so well.
Not tried the desktop version for a long time though.
