Never had 100% waterproofs. I rode a few miles from Derby to Newquay in rain one year and was soaked to the skin.

What was the gear they wore on Long Way Round?

I found Richa Monsoon pants to be completely waterproof so I bought a Richa jacket to match. It proved its worth in a couple of trips this year one where I actually had hailstones bouncing about two foot off the tank.

The guy I went to Le Mans with has the Richa ventilated stuff "good gear he says" but I wasnt the one stopping to put on a babygrow all in one

Got a Hein Gereike Master IV suit. Two winters so far and never let a drop of rain in. Very warm too.

i've also got hein gereicke kit. been very good to me.

they got a good range, you don't pay trhough the nose for the name, and they're sizes seem to fit me well (at 6"3 i've found many manufactures sizes to small on the leg).

I'm stingy so am always looking for a sale bargin (it's my feminine side coming through).

For waterproofs:

I use "Nitro" trousers ?60 from the J&S sale (the Northwich branch is 10 mins away from me). Bought em last Aug when I got the 'bird - used through the winter, nice and warm and no leaks.

Jacket is SPIDI reduced from ?300 to ?150 from Bill Smith Motors in Chester (where I got the 'bird). Again warm and dry through the winter. Cuffs have long zip and adjustable fastners, all sorts of gloves fit easily under them.
Removable thermal lining - use the lining in other than winter and it's too hot.
Armour for shoulders + elbows + back protector (back prot not brilliant as it's held in by one velcro patch - actual protector is good though),

Pockets stay dry, sleeve adjusters to keep 'em tight. Waist adjusters etc.
Have washed it a few times in the washing machine using "waterproof tech wash" and it's not bothered it.

I noticed the other day that they still had one left - think it might have been 44 chest but I'm not sure.

I also have a set of vintage waterproofs from the 80's. Bought from motorcycle city in Farnborough (anyone remember them?). No armour/not breathable but still actually waterproof after all those years.

Derek and I swear

by Belstaff for cordura waterproof jackets.

Derek has Richa cordura trousers, but I tend to stick to leather and wear waterproofs over the top. I bought myself a pair of Regatta waterproof/breathable/windproof trousers for ?14.99 and they are just as they are described. Brilliant.

Waterproofs

Anything Gore-tex is waterproof, It goes down to fitment with the stuff, if it lets in a draught, it will let in water.
My Aerostich suit is Gore-tex but let water through the zips, til I seam sealed them.
3 Year old Hein Gericke, voyager, all-season still 100% watertight.
If I know I am going to get wet on a longer trip, the voyager is the 1st choice, as it is much warmer, summer the aero with a pair of shorts is the coolest option.

I have had a Hein Gerike Voyager jacket and trouser set for a couple of years now and they are used almost every day in all weathers. No leaks and the pockets even stay dry.
Better than anything else i have had.

When I had my Bandit I used to use a Frank Thomas Aquapak that I bought from a mate for ?15, that kept me dry as a bone, haven't got a clue where that went to though I've searched all over for it but it could have got lost when we moved house.

I have used Dianes Goretex gear for years. Expensive, but fits well, is comfortable and never leaks until it is worn out.

Hein Gericke Master IV - did 850km in one go under buckets and was dry inside - plus it's got the removable inside jacket with heat-storing material that keeps you toasty. And, should you make compact with the ground in an unwanted and sudden fashion, the Hiprotec padding really is very efficient :yo:
